Heckhaven is exactly right! Corks are actually "plugs" taken from the bark of a tree! Pretty amazing, isn't it?

Sorry I missed the competition. It is more than that. These cork oaks have been grown for almost as long as they have been making wine and are a whole eco-system in themselves. They went through a bad patch when the corks were allowing some nasties in which gave a higher percentage of corked wine. This meant that screw tops and those plastic imitation corks started to gain a hold but these are not a sustainable method and they put farmers out of business.

This has been improved so always chose a wine that has natural cork.

I have seen cork groves in Italy, they are amazing places so help to keep them alive.
