One of the best tools I have found in working with my son's schools has been the expanding of my own understanding of his disability.

By learning about all of the possible symptoms and behaviors that are part of his disorder, I became so much better at advocating for him. I had the ability to look at things from his point of view and understand where his difficulties where, what was complicating them and what stratagies would be more effective. I could stand up in those IEP meetings and explain it in terms that allowed the teachers to see life through his eyes for a minute, which has made a remarkable difference.

I can see huge differences in my son as the attitudes of others change. I have made more progress in one semester than in the last five years combined.

I became so familiar with ADD that I became an ombudsman for children whose parents were not as good as I am at those things for whatever reason...

I am still fighting every day for him and actively trying to convince adults that I know with ADD that their depression and impulsivity are not being helped by anti-depressants if they refuse to acknowledge their ADD and treat it FIRST...

This is a family issue as the little nuts do not fall far from the tree...if you get my drift?

Parents are their children's most important advocates. Creating awareness and understanding is critical in our children's success.

Hi! I am Emma Kaye Diestro. I am a second year college student studying at the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines. I am taking up Bachelor of Elementary Education major in Special Education. After I graduate two years from now, We have been studying different exceptionalities for two years now. In two years time, I will be graduating to finally teach. I am an advocate as early as now by participating in activities and annual advocate activities of Down Syndrome, Autism and ADHD. Learning their own potentials and strengths, indeed makes parents, teachers and other professionals more aware and appreciative of the given exceptionality. I just hope that more and more concerned professionals and people would support the needs of special children.
