What do you think about Paul Atreides? Jedi Master? Spoiled Child?

The Lynch version -

Too tall, but mature, steady, respectful. Very true to the book.

The Sci-Fi version -

Whiny. Very whiny. In the book there's a pivotal scene where he's told to fight - he says he's not in the mood - and is taken to task for his insolence. In the movie, when he petulantly says he won't fight, his teacher says "Oh ok".

Paul was supposed to have an adult's maturity and rational, even while young, because he never had children playmates. He had been trained to be a leader, trained as a mentat, trained as a BG and a soldier. He was supposed to have respect for the wisdom of his elders.

Lisa,
I absolutely HATED the Sci-Fi TV version of Dune. Many fans of the books hated the Lynch movie because it left out a lot of key points. Like I always say, with a book of that magnitude, you have to take what you think will work on the big screen to tell the main storyline and leave out the rest. The original movie did a great job of that, while the long, drawn out TV version actually LEFT OUT some important points! No to mention the casting was dreadful and the portrayal even worse.

This is really one of those either-or things. I can't stand the Lynch version. Not even the magnificent Patrick Stewart can save that hideous, twisted version for me. I would leave the room if it was on. I dislike it to the point of hate. smile

Whereas I loved, loved, loved the Sci-Fi version. i am not saying it is without flaws, but I found it very enjoyable, visually interesting, with much better character development and closer to the book in ways that Lynch just perverted to his own sick tastes (ie - the depiction of the Baron, case in point - Sci Fi got it right, thank gods. IMO).

My husband likes both, but he is the only one I know who isn't totally either-or about the Dune movies.
