Hey,

my mother has a very strong lactose intolerance, this means any dairy products or foods containing lactose protein will make her seriously ill. Because this cuts out alot of fatty foods she struggles to put on weight & finds it very hard. Anyone got any ideas on what foods or anything that would help her bulk up?

Hi. I was just doing some " [color:"green"]searching [/color] " and ran across a page located here http://healthcastle.com/herb_lact.shtml that might be of some help.

I will keep checking to see what else I can find.

Thanks for your post! <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

hm...can she eat pastas? That would probably help...also, most people who are lactose intolerant can still eat yogurts...for bulking up I would suggest carbs and meats??

Hi,

I would suggest loading up on high protein foods and complex carbohydrates.

High protein: fish, chicken, turkey, tofu and high protein shakes and bars, etc. etc.

Complex carbohydrates: millet, oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes, whole grain breads, lentils, beans, etc, etc.

Regards,

Summer

Be careful of whole grain breads. Most have lactose in them. As a vegan since 1976, I find that more and more processed food contains lactose. When a product boasts, low fat, low sugar, new, improved, it usually means they reduced the fat/sugar and introduced lactose. Gotta read the label EVERY time, even if you are familiar with the product and just bought it yesterday.

I am lactose intolerant and I recently found an ice cream made grom goats milk that I can digest without problem. It is called Laloo's Goat Milk Ice Cream and it is awesome. I thought I was going to have to give up ice cream when I found out I was lactose intolerant. But when a friend recommended Laloo's to me, i almost flipped. It tastes just like cows milk ice cream and is lower in fat and calorie content. www.laloos.com - i think there is a coupon on the home page. They also have a store locator on their website so you can find the nearest retailer that sells Laloo's. Happy eating!

Here's something to think about...I nursed my kids for about a year and a half, now they're done. We are the only mammal that drinks milk as an adult, and the only mammal that drinks milk from another mammal. It's not natural, but there are too many yummy dairy foods to ignore. I was lactose intolerant and tried taking lactase with each meal that had dairy...not great results. My kids' pediatrician gave me info on this powder that you mix with water and you take it for 38 days and the lactose intolerance is gone...for good. I did not believe it, but they give a 6 month money back guarantee, so I tried it and it works! I can eat ice cream now and pizza and I have no symptoms at all...except for a little bigger waist smile I just turned a friend onto it, and she did a search and found a $20 discount at drinkmilkagain.com. It's $130 with the discount, but I paid $150 and it was worth every penny. You don't have to ever take it again after the 38 day program.

Does your mom like milk in her coffee or tea? Have her switch to cream - there is no lactose in cream. That's why low-carbers can use cream (but not milk where the "ose" is).

My mother (now age 89) has always had trouble keeping weight on (I missed that gene!!!). She puts cream on cereals and does well - she IS lactose intolerant.

I am completely milk intolerant and have eliminated it from my diet for years. Initially, I found it difficult to find foods without dairy in them and get my tastebuds used to them. I lost weight while I was figuring out what foods I could eat. Once I figured it out I regained the weight and then some. You know how that goes. I drink rice milk which packs a whole lot of calories and carbohydrates in one glass (120 calories/34 carbohydrates). It's low in protein (2 grams per 8-ounce serving). I beef up the protein by making a smoothie with a tablespoon of rice protein. Put a cup of rice milk, 1 T of rice protein, 1 cup of fruit of choice in blender, mix and enjoy. You're talking 300+ calories in one glassfull and loaded with vitamins, protein (12 grams) and calcium. Make sure you buy the enriched rice milk. You can do the same thing with soy milk. All kinds of soy products are available including yogurt, creamers, smoothies, whipped cream, ice cream. You name it. They make it. I am Lactose Intolerance and i cook with fat free milk but i just became a lacto-ovo vegetarian so when it comes to milk i think soy milk is better all around. OR Organic Milk.
