Thanks, Fishwife, glad you answered.. I guess I didn't make myself clear on Jake. He is a vt, just seems to me that he is young,. My other 2 Boris and Morris, are at leasdt 2 inches in body length and havce long full tails and fins. Jake's body is maybe a hair over about 11/4 inch, and his tail and fins seem to be in proportion to his body size. My concern was ( and is) that he couldn't or wouldn't seem to eat anything but the blood worms. I tried Tetra flakes and pellets, and he spit them out. at 1st I thought he didn't like them, but I got the Bio Gold, and he did the same thing. IF they are softened he eats them. I watched him and he gets food in his mouth, and if not soft, I can see him really chewing, then out it goes!!

update on Jake, he is looking much better and eating better.Still soaking the Bio Gold pellets before putting them into his tank, because they have a hard outer coating that he can't seem to get thru until they have softened. unsure why. He is coming right up to the top of the tank now when I approach it, flares at his reflection in the side of his tank, and in general is finally acting like a Betta should..all last week I added BettaFix to the water, then did 100% change and am not adding it now. I think it just was stress, as he is smaller than my other to piggies in fish clothing!! will tyr betta flakes tonight.

hey everyone, it is bettagirl. An update on Rusty (still aka "Pig") he is doing wonderfully! He has given me a few scares but other than that he is a very funny fish. My b/f thinks I am crazy but everynight when I turn out my bedroom light and the light from the Cichlid tank is still on Rusty comes to the side of the glass near me and starts waving to me. LOL. He knows it is bedtime and he knows to say goodnight to his mommy! He is also a VERY finicky eater. He will only eat betta bites and the one place around me besides PETCO and PETSMART (which I am boycotting btw lol)that sell it had a fire at the store next door to it and they are temporarily shut down while they repair the store. I suppose I will have to start ordering them online from thatfishplace.com (a wonderful store in Lancaster, PA. The cichlids are also doing well, they are getting SO big! I have 5 fish plus a BIG pleco.

charchar, i think you may have a betta girl. for a few months now i've wondered if the betta girl i got was a male. or at least confused.

she flares, she's not the best tank mate, she makes bubblenests even, and her vibrant and beautiful colouring makes it even harder to tell.

but today i confirmed it she was a girl. i think she just became mature within the last few weeks as her belly has been fat with eggs.

so, today we were all bored, i put both my girls in the same tank with my Pumkpkin. both Pumpkin and Princess (the female i just mentioned), ganged up on poor Mimosa2.

pretty soon Princess was picking a fight with Pumpkin, i just thought that was her way of flirting. Puumpkin is a sweet boy and didn't want to huurt her but after she ripped through some of his fins trying best to get on his nerves he let her have it good. slammed her up against the tank wall and out popped one single egg that slowly drifted to the floor.

well, NOW i know she's a girl. but i don't think SHE knows.

ENJOY!!

Got my new fishy. I named him Neptune. I got him at a local pet store, it took me forever to pick which one I wanted because there was a male there who flared every second and was blue and red and huge and then there was a white one, who was really pretty but didn't look too healthy, I finally rested on Neptune because he was so active in that little fish bowl. I had to double bag and make sure he was in a big one because I had to go to the hospital, and I showed my step grandfather who is currently staying there. He really likes Neptune thought he was a kicker. When I got home I noticed he was a little dull, probably scared from the car ride home.

Well, I got in the house and got the tank I cleaned the night before and filled with water to settle over night. Got a little cup and scooped my little fishy out and let him float in the tank for a while to get use to the new water. I noticedd his color was getting a little better and brighter once I let him in his new tank. I'm guessing he wasn't use to stretching and swimming because he was all confused. He just swam in the corner, and I thought maybe he doesn't know he has more room. He started moving about soon though and looks like he really enjoys his new home. He's very skittish still, but he ate. He doesn't seem to be too agressive but I'll know for sure in a few days, once he gets to know this tank is his for him I'm sure he'll get more protective of it.

Anyways, he's a great little fishy and I hope he's happyer now. I'm thinking of going back for another betta. I'm not sure yet. I need to wait for my pay check.

I just returned from a week long vacation. I had my dad watching my fish, and I just got them back. One of the girls looks a little strange. Her sides are bloated up, but other than that, she's normal. What is this?

Bunnywith, you might have better luck starting your own thread with more detailed symptoms. I am assuming its a betta...Are her scales sticking up like a pinecone? Or does she just look fat? I suggest answering these questions in a new thread....more people will see it and respond.
Good Luck and I hope she is doing better!

Not sure about posting rules here, but I couldn't find any really.

I have a new betta (my second attempt, my last one died a few years ago and it was quite sad) from Petco. I named him Tom Yum, after Tom Yum seafood--a Thai soup.

I looked at posts about how to find a good fish and this guy was the only one who was swimming around (he was also displaying at another male betta who was next to his tank, quite funny) but his water was a little gross.

I think he's starting a bubble nest on the side of his tank closest to me (he lives in a one gallon glass fishbowl with a silk plant and a hollow rock with lots of holes in it) and I think he's a bit of a spaz.

Every so often he'll get a burst of energy and FREAK OUT. I have two Siamese cats and even when they're next to him and staring at his tank he doesn't flip out. I think he's a happy little fish (I hope) and his color is wonderful. I was worried about his puffy little undergil things that fluff up because they're a very dark red, but this fits with the rest of his coloring and I don't see any rapid gil movement. He's a pearly color with pink stripes on his tail that go as dark as a magenta.

His water is also cloudy again (I did a full tank change yesterday because there were food pellets that had sunk and I don't have a baster yet.) I don't feed him more blood worms than he can eat--I give him about two or three and then two or three more after he finishes those, and only about two or three pellets because he's not a fan of those as much.

Anyways, that's my fish Tom Yum [if you think his name is awful, one of my cats is named Sushi] and if you can give any advice that'd be great.

I'm really glad I found this forum and the articles about bettas! They were so helpful!
