Hi,

My son has not been diagnosed with ADHD, but does display some of the symptoms. He has never passed the so called ADHD/ADD tests doctors give. He does however, have ODD, and was only diagnosed after I self diagnosed him. He has had numerous behavioral problems for years. I think I know what you are going through.

Let me know if I can be of any help or support to you. Was wondering if anyone was trying the new drug Strattera for these symptoms, my son is 10. Also wondering if anyone knows the long term growth affects, namely height, in children when using this drug long term.

Need more background, would be happy to answer any questions.

Have a great day!

Hi, Shamrock~
My son started on 25 mg. of Strattera in February. I was instantly amazed at his appetite increase! He gained 10 pounds in the first two weeks. The previous stimulants decreased his appetite. My son is attending better on Strattera, is much more affectionate, and more sensitive. However, we have lost control on his aggression and impulsiveness. It's so frustrating sometimes. I have been told to start giving him fish oil as it is shown to work better than stimulants. Have you heard anything on this?
Hang in there! <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

My step-daughter was diagnosed with ODD when she came to live with us in 4th grade. (She was more recently diagnosed with ADHD as well, but I'm not sure I agree with the dr's on that - long story and doesn't affect our relationship anyway.) Her health insurance paid for us to attend a therapeutic parenting class which helped us implement a very specific home environment using a point system where everything beyond the bare necessities had to be earned. And necessities were defined very basically as things like clean, not necessarily new, clothes that fit (as chosen by the parents); food to meet basic nutritional need; generic soap, shampoo, and toothpaste, and bare minimum school supplies. Things like getting to choose (within the family's means) clothes or what to eat or what toothpaste you get when needed, all had to be earned. It was HARD (particularly for her dad, who has ADHD.) But it was a miracle for our family. I've seen them implement similar systems on Nanny 911 (which, BTW, I think is a great show to watch if you have ODD kids, if nothing else, you feel less alone - although you do have to keep in mind that you are not watching a documentary...)

Best of luck,

Julie

Hi,
I have a 9 year old ADHD daughter and it is very difficult, I know. She has been on Strattera, Focalin and is now on Concerta. They work okay for school, but the side effects can be awful. (not sleeping, weight loss, horrible mood swings). If she is not on these meds., life is pretty tough with her at home and especially at school. I can only hope she is able to cope with her ADHD as she matures. All I can say is get all the help you can. Talk to your doctors, friends anyone who can help!! Hang in there too! I know it is a lot of work!!!!! G

Hi,
I also did the changing of the diet thing for my daughter, I had her tested for food sensitivities. I eliminated the things she was sensitive to and it didn't work for her. She still had the ADHD symptoms. We've tried the all natural approach too, (kinsenetic) spelling?? It also didn't work (she was put on certain all natural vitamins). So the diet change thing works for some but not all with ADHD. Good luck!!!

Hi there. I did a quick check and found a fairly good list of signs and symptoms for ADD / ADHD that you may want to check:
