Hi Silverrose,
I have finished with dying my hair and am letting it grow grey now. Instead of highlighting or coloring your hair, you can buy a rinse that washes into your hair and adds shine and brings out a better color of grey in your hair. Stores have those products and it is cheaper to buy it and do it yourself, instead of a beauty shop. I am waiting for all my grey hair to come in, and then I am using the rinse. It is healthier for your hair than highlights or color. I do know some women who add a blonde highlight to their grey hair and are satisfied. I hope this helps!

It is very difficult to highlight hair to a silver color. If you bleach out all of the yellow tones, you may be left with mush for hair. There are toners or tints, that can be used after the lightener, that will give it a silver color. I suggest visiting a hairdresser if you choose to do silver highlights. First reason: 'mush for hair', Second reason: yellow or gold highlights instead of the silver that you want.

Lynn,
This remind sme of when I had my hair colored once before and I have red tones, and I ended up with orange hair! LOL

It is important to reminder yellow and red tones. My red tones are strong and a toner always has to be used to tame the red!

Silverose, why not make use of a temporary rinse, in the color shade of your choice, until your hair is full out gray? Then, switch to one of the specially formulated shampoos and conditioners for gray hair. There are a number of products marketed to enhance gray/silver hair. Look for Clairol's Shimmer Lights Shampoo and Shimmer Lights Conditioner, specially formulated to brighten white and gray hair. Works well on many shades of blonde as well. Shampoos away yellow, and softens coarse gray hair.

I have used Clairol's Shimmer Lights, and Sally Beauty has its own private brand. I have been very pleased with both, but cannot always get over to Sally's. Last week I noticed in Walgreens that Pantene now has one too. So I am trying that and so far it looks good!

Good Luck, della

Another brand for gray or silver hair is Jhirmack Silver Brightening Shampoo with the purple label.
The only place I can find it now is CVS pharmacy. I had to go online to the website to find it.
I have salt and pepper silver hair and this stuff makes it look a lot better.
