Horror as a genre can create a cult icon over night. Just look at Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead or the subject of my avatar, Simon Pegg in Shaun of the Dead.

Which genre actor or actress has created the most memorbale horror charcter for you, and why?

Although I have many, I am going to say Jeffery Combs playing Dr Herbert West in Re-animator is in the top three. He is creepy, scary and intelligent all at once, and has some great lines in the film. He makes the movie great to come back to. He is also one of the reasons horror fans smile at The Frighteners, as his cameo is just great!

Ah, Jack Nicholson in "The Shining"

Of course, I happen to think he's fantastic in whatever role he plays - but he really brought the possessed/crazy guy to life!

And then, like I said in the werewolf post, I thought his character in "Wolf" was fantastic, too.

Christopher Lee, a true horror icon and a British guy too! Top choice!

Jack Nicholson is great in whatever he does, but the Shining really does standout. Anyone who has the DVD and has watched the small behind the scenes documentary will see the true Jack getting into his 'Jack' character...I was not sure which was scarier!

Also, I could see shades of that demented smile and barely concealed mania in young Jack Black in King Kong...the future Mr Nicholson?

Vincent Price should't be counted out nor Bela Legosi.

They are the originals! Mr. Price's voice still gives me shivers. <img src="/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

Yessssss! Someone who knows Jeffrey Combs! He is totally awesome and underutilized and stereotyped. I have watched most everything he has ever been in and wish some big producer/director would give him a nice juicy role in a blockbuster.

Thank you for giving him a much-deserved mention!

I have always enjoyed Jeffrey Combs' work on various Star Trek TV episodes. He could be SO oily, snide and menacing no matter how much makeup they loaded on him. He is physically small but comes across as dangerous in the extreme!

I was looking up Jeffrey Combs (he's one of those actors that I recognize the face but not the name) - I loved "Fortress".

But he has appeared in 10 movies bases on HP Lovecraft.

You have to be associated eith horror if your name is associated with Lovecraft.

Just like Vincent Price is associated with Poe.
