This is sort of an un official poll and plus I am curious to know how many of you either create your own patterns or improvise store bought patterns. I do both, and I improvise ALOT with store bought patterns, not because they are poorly written, I will usually get half way done and think "hey this would look good here, or I want a little more (or less) shaping here etc. etc.

I don't know how to execute a pattern, so I usually just look at three or four different instructions for something (like a beanie, or more recently a Santa hat) and then wing it on my own.

I've gotten much braver about improvising as I've gotten more experienced. I've never knit a sweater from my own pattern, but I do mess with details like necklines, rib styles, dimensions, and stitch pattern.

Hey that is getting on the path to create your own. I am glad to hear that, one of the first steps to creating your own is actually improvising.

Yes! (how did I miss this thread before?) I can't say I've ever knit a pattern EXACTLY as the pattern read, so I've branched out into doing my own thing.
My problem-- sizing. At first thought, I always think a calculator and a tape measure is all that's needed, but it's not.

Yes I do...my grandmother taught me to knit (and crochet) before I was even school age and she encouraged me to design my own patterns right from the start. Often I just cast on and let the yarn dictate what the final result will be.

Yes, I haven't used a commercial pattern in years. Most of my designs I post freely on the store website for people, especially since I knit myself 52" sweaters and don't want to rewrite the pattern in multiple sizes! Donna www.cashmerecat.com

Oh I have books with patterns, one after another, but do I use them for the patterns, No. I usually pick out a stitch I like from a stitch guide and then take it from there, but then I have not been much into doing clothing, my thing is afghans and large things like this.
Now I am into loom knitting and as for patterns, there is not much available. So you make up your own or go without. There are books but they are pretty simplistic and repeated things as I have found by purchasing them.

We have some very creative people here I remember when I first started to do any type of needlework, I was completely convinced that you had to be born with the "gift" or you were just plain "magic" if you knew how to do your own pattern, hey quit laughing I really thought that
