I am curious. Based on what I see in the scrapbook stores, 99% of scrappers copy layouts. I was wondering to what extent:

1. copy an entire layout, using the same paper
2. copy an entire layout, use different paper
3. copy parts of the layout so that the layout isn't even recognizable after you have created it
4. sit down with supplies and just create your own layout

oh paula, please!

as far as copying... there is really nothing new under the sun...I copy things from others' layouts to CMT's ads!!!

I have copied by buying the same paper I see in someone else's lo, or by copying placement (BH sketches are awesome for this!!), I have also copied elements I like on a page. I have also sat down and just done layouts, but obviously my brain has got the ideas I use from somewhere, so they are really just copies too... LOL

Hi,
I like to make my own layouts. A lot of times I'm so busy I do copy and use "blue print" guides; I also use kits with preprinted layouts. It's fun because people are always feeling the page to see if it's printed or cut and paste.

My husband says, "I just don't understand you guys; you buy perfectly good paper and cut it up and then stick it back together!"

I usually keep my photos in square or rectangle shapes. I'm not much for cutting shapes or cutting around people in photos. That's just my style!

I definitely use other peoples ideas to inspire my creative juices. I very rarely completely copy a layout unless it is a kit. However, if I fall in love with a layout in a magazine or online I will often copy parts of it with products that I already have. Most of the time I use the ideas I see from other people to get my creative juices going so I can create on my own!

I really really like using sketches or "blueprints". That is one of the best ways for me to get my layouts going!

There is NOTHING wrong with Scraplifting though! Whatever it takes to help you get your photos and memories preserved!

Ugh, I just took a challenge to do a layout that is not my style....so I tried a collage-y layout.

Here it is:

Obviously I have no style whatsoever!

I have gotten some ideas from others but mostly use my own. Right now I'm doing one of my son's life. (he's 35) I just use colors I feel are age appropriate and add pictures, decals, ribbons, etc. I plan to do one for my daughter too. She's 27 and has 3 boys whereas my son has one son. It's been a lot of fun and it's my first try at scrapbooking. I definately will do more of it.

I layout my pictures and let them speak to me! ha ha ha!! No, seriously...I don't copy. I use my own creative energy to scrap, which is why I am a scrapaholic!

Reading what Stamping Frog's husband said about scrapbooking sounds exactly like what my husband said when I took up quilting - why are you taking perfectly good pieces of fabric, cutting them up and then sewing them back together? Men just don't "get it", do they!

As for layouts, I am very new to this craft, but have gotten the "bug" big-time. My head is swimming with projects I want to get done "yesterday", but I've learned that patience is a real virtue in scrapbooking. So far I've just done my own layouts, but using the multitude of goodies that are available out there - transfers, stickers, fancy scissors, etc. I'm going to get brave with my next page and probably use ribbon or ric-rac or something like that. I am soooooo glad this forum is here!

I usually like to take what I have & want to include on a page, including what type of lettering I want to use or have in my head and see where everything fits. I also take into consideration what the page before looks like and what I want the next page to look like so I don't have any (gasp!) back-to-back lookalikes!! I don't really copy other layouts, I just go with whatever looks right at the time.

i don't usually copy layouts. i love experimenting with different shapes, textures and color. what i love most about scrapbooking is that it makes drab pictures interesting and beautiful. and it enables me to express what i feel about the picture with with catchy captions.

its like telling a story

I don't usually copy a page entirely - but I do like to use the idea to get me started!

I agree 100%! I just scrapped some not so great pictures. once they were cropped down and put onto the layout and embellished the pictures are just so much nicer now! It is amazing what cropping alone can do to spruce up your pictures and bring the subject more focus!
