I already gave money to a couple organizations involved in the tsunami
relief effort, but I really wanted to do more. Then I found out that
Save the Children is running this campaign that will help orphaned and
separated children in Southeast Asia now and also will help change the
way humanitarian crises are dealt with in the future. You can find it
at
www.SaveTheChildren.org/Protection.There is a piece of legislation in the US Congress right now that would
make sure the US protects the interests of children and women whenever
it delivers emergency humanitarian aid. As the tsunami in Southeast
Asia showed, often it is children that are most affected when a
humanitarian disaster strikes. Over one-third of the lives lost in the
tsunamis were children. And even now, with so many children separated
from their families or orphaned, children face a high risk of
contracting a disease or being abducted and exploited by child
traffickers.
If you go to
www.SaveTheChildren.org/Protection you can send a free
email to your representatives in Congress telling them to support the
"Women and Children in Crisis and Conflict Protection Act." If you
have already given more and are looking for another way to help, this
is a worthy cause.
