After sort of a personal 'crash and burn' about two years ago, I was began searching desperately for some peace in my life. (I left the Church after finishing 3 years of ministry - which I poured my life into....long story but I found myself empty, lost, hurt and broken). Anyway, all of my beliefs were in tatters, but slowly I focused in on the the idea that personal peace was a good way to start. It's so simple, really, but the Serenity prayer became my most often used prayer for peace then...and even now, I use it to refocus and rebalance...

God, grant me the serenity (peace) to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things that I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Your will, not mine, be done in all things.

I use the prayer of St Francis. Lord make me an instrument of thy peace, where there is hatred let me sow love... (it's quite long)

This was the method I learned from a book by a sheik. So, you can interpret the word Lord in different ways based on your underlying religious beliefs.

I loved St Francis and knew this prayer before I came upon this method so it was perfect for me.
