Well, I'm home again from my latest adventure. Wildlife was in hiding most of the trip. We saw three squirrels, one immature eagle in flight, and two mature eagles on a nest.

The nest is near the town of Valdez. The pair were performing in the nest. It looked like they may have been feeding chicks, but we could not see the chicks from our advantage. None-the-less, it was a great sighting.

On the ferry from Valdez to Whittier we saw one sea otter, and a huge number (over 100) of sea lion on a haul-out beach. The photo that I got with my digital camera isn't all the great. I'm hoping for a better one from the SLR with the 300 zoom.

That must have been pretty neat to see all those sea lions in one place. I only saw a few of them while in Alaska and the most we saw together was two. The eagle's nest sighting must have been pretty exciting too. I saw an eagle's nest about 5 years ago while canoeing through a place called "the Trough" here in WV. The eagle was sitting on a branch near it, but not on it. That was pretty cool.

I confess to always confusing seals and sea lions so I did a little research to try to resolve my confusion.

Marine Mammals

I'm guessing that the large number of sea lions you sighted were Stellar Sea Lions (rather than California Sea Lions) and that the marine mammals I see most often on the East Coast are Harbor Seals or Gray Seals. This fall we will be returning to Cape Cod and hope to see some of the many seals that breed and overwinter in and around the Monomoy Islands in Nantucket Sound. The last time I saw large numbers of seals was when we were returning to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia after an Atlantic whale watching excursion.

Thanks so much for posting your Bald Eagle Nest Sighting because it inspired me to write up my own account which I had been putting off.

I look forward to your SLR pic of the sea lions. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
