eek eek eek
I'm still rubbing my eyes in disbelief. It is 11 PM Christmas Eve and we were just getting ourselves ready to bed so Santa can come. DH looked out the window to see if there was any sign of Rudolph's nose shining through the snowy clouds and what did his eyes see????

A Northern Pygmy Owl!!!! It was sitting on the Sheperds Hook that my bird feeder hangs on. I took a couple of photos. They didn't turn out very well. I didn't want to use a flash on the poor thing. I have to figure out how to post these.

Checking out the owls range, we are in an "uncommon" area for it. I can't tell you how excited I am. I've made so many typos because my hands are shaking. This is a first for me. And to think it was sitting there just feet from my dining room window.......

Rose (heading to bed with visions of owls running through my head---Forget Christmas, I've already gotten all the gifts I need.)

Rose!!! How exciting!!! How did you ever get to sleep after that??!

Did you hear him calling at all? What does he look like? How big is he? Did you know right away what it was or did you have to look it up?

I'm full of questions and can't wait for you to post that pic!!

Hope the rest of your holiday is filled with other wonderful surprises!!

Rose, I looked northern pygmy owls up in my audubon society bird field guide. Couldn't find it in my index. Is there another name I could look it up under? I'm anxious to see what they look like. Congrats on adding to your life list. That was mother nature's Christmas gift to you.

Oh, Rose!! What a wonderful gift from nature!! Like Shelley, I would have been completely unable to sleep after that. Wow!!

Here are some pictures of northern pygmy owls:

The Owl Page

According to that site their range is described as:
Quote:
West North America, from British Columbia and southern Alaska south through the Rock Mountains to California and Arizona, and possibly also to the mountains far north Mexico.
Northern Pygmy Owls are essentially sedentary, except for altitudinal movements downslope in winter. Southward irruptions during winter may occur in years of food shortage.

Ho, ho, ho....You must have been a very good girl this past year to get such a wonderful treat from Santa, Rose. Sadly the only owls I've ever seen are ones which are in cages at a raptor rehabilitation site in Vermont. Ones that can't be released for one reason or another remain on site.

Hope your owl remains in your area to give you continued sightings in the New Year.
