Hi all!

I've began a new series of articles on Harry Potter Divination. The first is called Harry Potter Divination - Tea Leaf Reading.

Have you read the Harry Potter series? Seen any of the movies? What are your thoughts on the Archetypes that play out in the stories? How has the methods of Divination influenced the younger generation...and even adults? Why do the characters capture our imagination so much? Are there lessons about spiritual growth in them?

I'd love to hear any and all thoughts on these questions, or the article on Tasseography/Tasseomancy (Tea Leaf Reading).

I have been reading the series and enjoy it immensely. The magic in the stories is plain and simple imagination. It reminds me of stories I read as a child - Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and Beast and so on - magic mirrors, magic wands, spells....

After I read the first book, my thought was Harry was an abused child who used magic as an escape. The story whisked Harry out of this unhappy environment and put him in a place where he was loved and had opportunities to explore new and fascinating worlds.

I have heard that Rowling may kill off Harry in the end. Perhaps, that scenario ties back to his abusive childhood and he really is unable to overcome the neglect and abuse he received in his aunt's home.

Janet, I llllove HP sooo much! I've read all the 5 books and I've watched all the 3 movies, adn I can't wait for more! I think these books have a lot of wisdom in them. I've heard that, while some priests criticize JK Rowling for making kids interested in wizardry and dark arts, some use the books in their Sunday school classes, because the story has a strong spiritual message. I'm not really good with Archetypes, that is to say, I don't know the names for most of them. But I believe that Harry's story - the story of a parentless kid discovering his hidden powers and talents, making a conscious choice between good and evil, pressing on no matter what hardships come his way - finds an echo in every man's heart. Personally, I think about HP each time I face a problem or experience a failure. Funny as it may seem, the thought about Harry's persistence, courage and self-esteem gives me the power to go on and make it through difficult situations.
As for professor Trelawney, Harry's Divination teacher, she's one of my favorite characters, although she has all those funny things about her. If I were studying at Hogwarts, I'd take additional Divination classes!
Love,
Elena

I didn't address the diviniation - reading tea leaves - I think some people havae a gift for that, as well as clairvoyance. One has to have an open mind.

Me too, guys! (And welcome to the New Age Forum!)

A part of me thinks "Wow, wouldn't it be great to go to a school like that"? Not to mention, enter a world where the magical is "reality" and it's the Muggles who are out of step!

Angie, I've heard, too, that Rowling will kill off Harry. This would certainly be a reverse to the "happily ever after" tale, which isn't always a good mirror of how things happen in life.

Hi Elena!

I think Emma Thompson brought such great energy to Trelawney's character. I was impressed! I don't usually thing "comedic" when I think of Emma Thompson.

Archetypically, I think there's some Scapegoat archetype going on. Jesus was considered a "scapegoat" (an animal that took upon itself the sins of the people, and then was exiled out of the camp). In fact, Jesus' death was considered a "stumblingblock" (skandalon in the Greek, from where we get the word "scandal"). Harry himself almost died, only to be "resurrected" as the one person that could kill Voldemort. Also, he's blamed for things that he has not done, and is shamed quite a bit.

*puts a bowl of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans on the table as we discuss all things Harry*
