I've just written a review of Llewellyn's gorgeous velvet and satin Tarot bag. It can be found here: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art17818.asp (And there's a large picture, too! )

What do you use to hold your Tarot cards, oracle decks, runes or stones? Have you ever made a Tarot bag from scratch?

That's a gorgeous bag! I keep the two that I use the most in velvet bags. One I made, one I bought. Last year I crocheted a tarot bag for a friend who wanted something to use when she travelled. I lined it with fabric to make it more sturdy. I'd like to make one for myself like that sometime too. The rest of my decks are in the boxes they came in.

Oh, also I've seen some pretty ones in ebay.

It is a beautiful bag, Heather!

I'm not especially crafty, but I actually looked for Tarot bag patterns in Wal Mart on Monday. (What was I thinking?!)

Would your pattern be easy to explain? It would make a great article if you're interested!

My Mom made my first Tarot bag for me. She is a great knitter, and so it was a knitted one. But I didn't really feel my Tarot belong in there, although the bag was great... Then, one day, my Grandma passed away... We were at her place shortly after the funeral, looking through things and deciding which to take and which to give away, when I saw that bag... I've never ever seen it before, I didn't even know my Grandma had such a bag! It was a small black velvet bag decorated with silver thread ornaments. It was lying near her mirror. I've never found out who took it out of which drawer. It's not that I really care... To me, it was (and still is) Grandma's last present to me, made after her passage to Heaven. It was as if she'd encouraged me to go on with the cards... I still keep them in this bag, and I'd never part with it!

I'm terrible with explaining sewing patterns, I'm sorry. I'm not a great seamstress. For the lining I just cut two rectangles and sewed them together with the top open, then I folded the top over and sewed it all the way around so I could put a ribbon through for a drawstring. I think if you found a drawstring bag pattern you could use the basic techniques and adapt it to whatever size you wanted?

I did the crochet part in shell stitch, but I don't have it anymore so I'm not sure exactly what the pattern was, I just kind of made it up as I went. If I get the time to do another one I'll let you know, ok? I'd like to eventually.

Elena, your grandmother's bag sounds beautiful! Heather

Elena, your grandmother's bag sounds beautiful! What a neat treasure to remember her by, and as you say, a confirmation to stay with the cards.

Ah, I see Heather. I'm not very crafty myself! I wonder if I'd be able to modify the Llewellyn bag? (Just thinking aloud here.) Can one use fabric paints on velvet? Hmm.
