Hello Dick:
The State Department medical information sheet for Americans traveling abroad indicates, as you suggested, that Medicare does not provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside of the U.S.A.
Medical Information for Americans Traveling AbroadIf you are considering purchasing travel insurance, there are several different types of coverage available. It is really important to read the fine print and know exactly what you are looking for before you sign up.
"Travel Medical Insurance" or "International Medical Insurance" provides reimbursement for emergency medical expenses when traveling, or living, abroad. Coverage usually requires payment of a specified deductible and co-payment.
"Trip Protection" plans or "Trip Cancellation Insurance" reimburses non-refundable expenses if an unexpected crisis (including death or sickness) impacts your travel plans before or during your trip. Coverage usually includes emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation. These benefit limits are lower than in Travel Medical Insurance, but there is generally no deductible or co-payment.
