First off, I just read your article (10 things you should know about wicca) and I LOVED it, it put me in mind of a few things... like the fact the neighborhood kids are "shunning" my kids, since we just REFUSE to convert. Oh well. anyway I love your site, and I definitely want to know more. I have a question for you. I've been told by several people who are, or say they are, wiccan that my birthday is on a holiday, could you tell me if it is? And if so, what holiday? It's may 2. Thanks a ton, and glad your here

And how do people of other religions treat you? Do you have difficulty with them? This whole thing with my kids has got me on a bit of a rampage

Traditionally, May 1 is a holiday, called Beltane. In the northern hemisphere, some people celebrate it any time between April 30 and May 2. In the southern hemisphere, May 1st would be celebrated as Samhain. Im going to assume that you live in the Northern Hemisphere. Beltane is a holiday that is highly recognized as one of the "Greater Sabbats." Celebrated primarily as a european Pagan holiday, it is very fertility oriented. During one of the "old customs," couples would weave the maypole ribbons, then, when the pole is completed, go off into the fields with the person in front of them and make love. The main herb that I have found that seems to correspond with Beltane (or May Day) is woodruff. It's also a faerie holiday. Hope this gave you some insight.

Magickalmeli, sorry if i misspelled it. If the Spring of Equinox is celebrated on March 21, is it too late to plant seed of your desire in the month of April? :rolling:

like the fact the neighborhood kids are "shunning" my kids, since we just REFUSE to convert. I hear that Utah is a tough place to live if you are not Latter Day Saints. There have been TV specials that have dealt with it. Jesus never taught that anyone should be "shunned" You will always find individuals that are unkind.

Oh, I'm not a practicing witch. I'm just one of those people who believe that all religions have a shred of truth in them, but no religion encompasses the whole.
mmmm I told one lady that america was based on the wiccan belief of "an it harm none, do as ye will" ticked her off royally! Lol! Anyway, I studied religions in college, and did my thesis on comparitive religion (following the threads of similarity throughout the religious world) really offended some people by comparing the story of Jesus to some of the greek myths (but they really were similar!) That's one of the reasons why I'm the mythology host here.
I also have a keen interest in the wiccan faith because many fantasy works are based on that religion. Keeps authenticity in my work.

Jessica,
I was not Wiccan when I was growing up, but I also was not the religion that seemed to be the majority in my hometown. No matter what, it can be hard to be different when you are a child.
Shunning is a rough one. I have the luxury of being able to let such people in my life be, and then get on with it. I was always the uber-intellect child who would argue with people and ask them how their intolerance was demonstrating charity and promoting love, which usually just [censored] them off more than my general existence.
Give you kids all the love you can and teach them that the diversity of life on this plaent is a wonderful thing, even if you don't understand it. My parents did pretty well when it came to helping us to understand it was ok that our family was different. And the endless hugs helped no matter what.

I've found as long as I've kept my sense of humor (which is warped to say the least lol!) nothing can ever really go wrong or be bad. Life can be pretty good if you don't take the idiots seriously
