Captain Underpants cannot use his superpowers to keep him on the shelves of some school libraries across the country, according to a new report
from the American Library Association (ALA). Captain Underpants is among a number of books that wound up on the ALA�s list of most frequently challenged books last year. A challenge is a formal written complaint
filed with a library or school about the content or appropriateness of a book. The association made public the list in conjunction with Banned
Books Week, which is set aside to celebrate Americans' freedom to read.

Diane Ravitch, research professor of education at New York University, said that censorship occurs because people believe what their children
read will serve as a role model for behavior. She said those on the political right are concerned about topics and stories, while those on the left are concerned about words and images.
