I had this idea tonight and I am trying to figure out how to make it into a pattern. I am very new to knitting. I haven't done any fair isle or intarsia knitting. Believe me, you'll know when I try hehe.

So I don't want to give anything away just yet <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> All I will say now is that it will be for charity.
I thought about knitting a scarf in one main color. With a second color I would put a certain symbol (surprise) throughout the scarf. I am sure I could figure the pattern out and graph it easily. I need ideas on what stitches to use.
Maybe a certain pattern?

Another thing I thought would be nice is just to knit a small tote bag with a pocket, where the pocket has the symbol on it. That way I could hide an ugly back, if there is one.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction? TIA

Just experiment, make swatches and experiment some more. Trust me when I say it ALWAYS looks great on paper but is a whole different story when you actually knit it.

I would second Eva's comments about practicing the pattern and not expecting it to look just like it did on paper. Keeping the pattern VERY simple will help a great deal.

Another option to doing the pattern in color would be to do it in reverse stockinette (knit the purls and purl the knits), so that the pattern is in texture, rather than color. Then you don't have a messy side or loose ends to sew in.

Just a thought,
