Margarethe Meyer Schurz died in Washington, D.C., at the age of 43. The memorial tablet, dedicated in 1929, rests only a few feet from the site of the building where she ran her kindergarten -- the first ever in America.

In memory of Mrs. Carl Schurz (Margarethe Meyer Schurz) Aug. 27, 1833 -- March 15, 1876, who established on this site the first kindergarten in America, 1856.

The restored first kindergarten building was moved to the Octagon House grounds from its original site in downtown Watertown, corner of N. Second and Jones streets in December 1956, just 100 years after its founding in 1856 by Mrs. Carl Schurz. It was dedicated on September 15, 1957. The interior, a living room used as a classroom, is furnished in the period and portrays a kindergarten class in progress. is from

Early Childhood education is generally divided into three areas:

Preschool - ages 3-4
Kindergarten - ages 5-6
Primary Grades - ages 6-8

It's surprising that primary grade students are considered to be in the early childhood grouping. The reason that they are included is because they still share a lot of the same developmental characteristics as their younger counterparts. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Wow, I'm learning some fascinating things, though. Did you realize in 1941 that a third of all households still cooked with wood or coal, and many still required water to be lugged in from a well or pond? And these women were all being hounded to work full time because the men were all off at war, so they didn't even have a husband at home to help! Talk about a lot of chores!

I'm sorry! I really thought this would be an easy question to find the answer too. I'll find some easier questions.

You know Lisa, I heard somewhere that even with all our modern conveniences, that it still takes a person the same amount of time to clean and do laundry as it did back when things were scrubbed by hand... I really don't think that's true! I mean, while it takes all day to do laundry, you can do other things as well... and it only takes a few minutes to clean my kitchen floor with my cool cleaner thingy! PS: I used a hand washtub and wringer and line to wash clothes for several years while my family lived in Panama (the country). It was backbreaking, hard on the hands, time consuming and all-consuming (thought-wise, etc.) for ME. If you didn't do it correctly and pay attention, you not only didn't clean the clothing properly but you could get seriously injured!! Yikes...(hopefully) NEVER again!
