not meaning any disrespect to you Marxman2, but this is hard for me to believe. Especially since all last battles were one hit KO's for me.
Mind you, I had a reason to pump my characters stats up to the max. I have the Pal version so I get to fight the Dark Aeons and Penance.
Well, all I can say to you is that you will have to run in circles since you don't want to leave the final save sphere. Yes, I am serious. Run in circles and get into random battles. Unless you're doing a game where you're not touching the sphere board at all and therefore keep the initial stats...
but, whether you want to or not, in almost all RPGs you will have to run in circles to train up at some point. (FFX-2 is different, you run in circles to gain something other than level ups)
There's nothing wrong with leaving Sin, because when you return you'll find the battles easier, since there is better AP and leveling up spheres outside of Sin, and things will go much faster if you DO go outside and run in circles somewhere else, or even challenge the Bosses in Battle Arena (assuming you catch feinds)
and about the flare. It is a formidible attack. It's base damage is somewhere between Holy and the third level elemental spells (blizzaga, firaga, thundaga, Waterga).
So obviously, it's not that powerful. The most powerful spell in the game is Ultima.
But black magic is only useful at the start of a game, halfway through you'll find it faster and much economical to use physical attacks
