According to the book
A Stream of Dreams - The Ultimate Dream Decoder For The 21st Century (click on the link to see my review of this book), fish represent:
Quick Interpretation: Spirituality; going with the flow; searching
Popular Expressions: Big fish in a small pond; Have bigger fish to fry; There are plenty of fish in the seas; Fish around for something
The fish is a wonderful symbol of going with the flow. Is that what the fish in your dream symbolizes? Is it swimming contentedly downstream, indicating that you feel that your life is traveling along at a steady pace? Or, if the fish is out of the water, is it an indication that you feel like a fish out of water? What in your life don't you feel comfortable about?
Perhaps the fish signifies that you feel like a big fish in a small pond. Do you like holding sway over other fish, or is it time to get out of the small pond and undertake new challenges?
Are you eating a fish in your dream? If so, do you need to incorporate more protein in your diet? Or are you trying to catch a fish, indicating a desire to commune with nature and simply relax?
The fish is also a symbol of Christianity, so consider the fish in your deram in relation to your thoughts on religion.
Personally, I think dream guides are quite general, and that we have our own personal symbolism. What a symbol means to you is dependent on my culture, and your perspective and experience...and may be quite different than mine. It's possible to build up your own dream decoder by taking a symbol, such as a fish, and free associating what that symbol means to you personally. After a while, you'll see patterns emerge, and interpreting your dreams gets much easier.
