At DePauw University, professor Janis Price has been reprimanded, demoted, and had her pay docked for making journals discussing homosexuality available to her teaching students.
Wait, it may not be what you think.....At this Methodist university Professor Price placed copies of Focus on the Family's teacher magazine in the back of the classroom. She mentioned that they were there. No assignments were given. No mandatory reading of articles.
After a student complained Price was reprimanded and had her classes and pay cut. Is this censorship? Is the university simply looking out for all its students gay or straight? Does a teacher have the obligation to make all information, positive and negative, about an issue available to college students? Does a teacher have an obligation to only promote a positive view?
What do you think?

Wait! Wait! She simply provided information? Isn't this censorship. Shouldn't the ALA be coming down on the university for banning books?

College students are adults. If they aren't capable of choosing for themselves what items to read and what items will upset them, there's something much larger going wrong.

Whichever student complained should be sent back to elementary school.

Agreed. When I was in college my roommate, a fundamentalist Christian, complained about taking sociology and psychology courses. I told her that she couldn't argue her view points if she did examine the other sides first.
This is much the same. If your pro or con homosexuality (I know, I know) you should be able to examine the opposing arguements so that you can answer objections. What happened to the free exchange of ideas?
I concur. This is part of becoming an "educated" person (as oppossed to one who is merely trained for a career).
I don't know if this is in the ALA's area, but if definitely is within the ACLU's. Do you think they would take the case?

A new survey indicates that almost half of Americans thinks the 1st Ammendment goes to far.

It is very easy to sway people by giving them the extremes. The other day I had a man trying to get me to join an anti-porn rally, the only problem is, his idea of porn would include my artwork! Including that little faerie I have as my avatar!

The first amendment is there to protect us, but many people only look at extremes. You wave around some horribly graphic, and offinsive image, get a bunch of people insensed at the thought of their children seeing this, then get some laws pushed through. Sadly, everyone has a different opinion of what is acceptable, so many things get censored and wiped out.
This is the problem with censorship and turning our backs on the First Ammendment. Who decides what is acceptable? I constantly have to remind teachers and students that it's okay to have books with pictures of the Sistene Chapel (the creation of Adam).
