John Newton, English pastor for 40 years- also the hymn writer of the famous hymn "Amazing Grace" In the 1700's Newton penned 21 letters to his adopted daughter Elizabeth Catlett. A man who was a wretched sea captain of slave ships was transformed into a compassionate, loving man of God. He later became a parent with him wife Polly of their 2 orphaned nieces.
