Ok - Here's the legal stuff first:
The first one to answer THREE trivia questions correctly will win the prize. This contest is open to anyone living in the US or UK who is aged 18 or older. Only posts that are unedited will be accepted as answers. Prize will be shipped to the winner at no cost to the winner. The prize will be a Jim Brickman Peace CD and Music Book which is worth $28.00. For complete rules, please visit ]http://www.bellaonline.com/misc/sweeps/rules.asp

Now, my turn! It's my first official trivia contest as your classical music editor! I have the awesome Jim Brickman's Peace CD AND Songbook to give away. You may be wondering why a Christmas book & CD in February? Well you are going to need to practice to play these songs as well as Jim by Christmas...that's why!

The first person to answer 3 trivia questions correctly will win. To give everyone time to tell their friends about this, I will post the 1st question on Sunday, Feb. 5th.

As soon as I see a correct answer, I will identify the person and the answer, and I will post a new question. So after the 5th you will just have to keep checking back in to see when the next question comes up!

Tip: You will be able to find all answers either in my articles or in forum discussions.

Good Luck to everyone. See you this weekend! <img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
Here's a description of the book and a list of the songs in both the book and CD.

Marzipan.
<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />

Yea! RenaissanceWoo! <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Yes, the answer is marzipan!

RenaissanceWoo has 1 correct.
Question #2

Find the 3 mistakes in this statement;

While George Friedrich Handel wrote the music for Messiah, the words actually came from his longtime friend, Charles Jennings. Many debate that the words were inspired by scriptures; such as The Hallelujah Chorus which is the grand finale of this famous oratorio. While others say that the lyrics were completely original. in all likelihood, it was a combinationf of the two.

Woohoo! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Here's my attempt at question #2. I'm sort of guessing at the third mistake. I should be working, but I'm researching Messiah instead! I need to get some work done now so I'm putting in my best guess. <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
OH! So close, Renaissance! You got 2 out of 3.

It was a good guess, though!

Get some work done, and come back at lunch break.

Remember to check MY articles.

Hehe....

Okay, here's my second attempt....I think I'm overthinking this. <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
Yes you are overthinking this, but since you are the only one playing I will let you know, you are completely cold! It has nothing to do with how Jennens came up with the words.

Hint: There are 2 mistakes very close together!

Hey guys! Why am I the only one playing?

Okay, here goes attempt three....boy do I suck or what? LoL! <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Oops, I forgot to delete the last part of the my last entry which was my second wrong answer. "The argument blah blah". Please disregard that part.
2nd hint: Check your titles!

I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make this so tricky. <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
It's a lot easier from this side of things! <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I'm running our of colors to use! LoL!

Yes! You got it!
Whew! I really didn't mean to make that a trick question. <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> It's my first forum contest. <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

OK, that's 2 correct for RennaissanceWoo, and it looks like she's gonna take this thing in a sweep!

For those of you who weren't paying attention, the answers were:
Charles Jennens (not Jennings)
"Hallelujah" (not "The Hallelujah Chorus")
"Hallelujah" is at the end of the 2nd section (not the Finale)

<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: renaissancewoo Re: Classical Music Trivia Contest - 02/09/06 12:47 AM
LoL! Yippee! At first, I couldn't find your "Messiah" article. Then I found the "previous features" link! I actually had checked the title, but against another article I was reading and that article called it "The Hallelujah Chorus"! No wonder I was so confused! LoL! I tricked my own self. Hehe.

Hope everyone else plays along too. I'm feeling pretty lonesome here.
Question #3

A Symphony Orchestra is divided into these 4 major categories:
Percussion, Woodwinds, Brass, & Strings.

Which category(s) would the pipa and the tabla fall into?

<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: MeganBoardGames Re: Classical Music Trivia Contest - 02/09/06 04:46 PM
Pipa would be strings (it's a Chinese lute)
Tabla would be percussion (they're like bongos.... I think they're Indian)
Exactly right Megan!

The Pipa is a plucked handheld harp - so is strings
The Tabla are a pair of drums (one large, one small) - so are percussion

That's 2 for RenaissanceWoo
and 1 for Megan_Romer
<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
Question #4

Soprano Ying Huang's CD Bitter Love is based on what opera?

<img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: renaissancewoo Re: Classical Music Trivia Contest - 02/10/06 06:31 PM
The Peony Pavillion
(The Return of the Soul)

by Tang Hsien-tsu
Yes! Bitter Love is a collection of the love songs from the opera "Peony Pavilion"

That is 3 correct answers for RennaissanceWoo, so ...

Tada! We Have a Winner! Yea! <img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />

Congratulations! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
