here is a thread for us to discuss cheap and inexpensive ways to raise pets. What tips do you have?

I'll start with one - I get a generic brand of cat food that is around ten dollars from my local ALCO. I am signed up online for ALCO specials and around once a week or every other week I get emailed a high-value printable coupon. These coupons are usually 20%, 25% or 30% off a single item.

When I get a 30% off one, I always run down and grab a new bag of cat food. I toss the food into a plastic garbage bucket with a tight fitting lid and use a scoop to get the cat food out.

Today one of those 30% off Qs came along. I printed one for me and one for DH, and we each ran to ALCO and bought a huge bag of cat food that only came to $7 each.

I'd rather get my pets expensive catfood, but with my frugal budget I have to be content with making sure they simply have plenty to eat.

What frugal pet owner tips do you have?

My dog prefers a plastic waterbottle to play with instead of an expensive squeaky toy or a stick. You do have to watch and take it away before she chews peices off it though.

Sad1, that is a good frugal toy! Then you can recycle the plastic before it gets too chewed up. Perfect!

My cats like crumpled up paper and napkins. smile

DH just recently made a cat house for my cats from some scraps of lumber. he cut a hole for the door and we put old blankets inside. Then we put our toaster oven in there. At night is it set to "warm" which is just enough to make a tiny amount of radiant heat.

I am thinking of insulating it with padded mailing envelopes that I just staple-gun in. I have been saving up the padded envelopes for years and have so many of them.

I just have to ask because if I don't my brain won't rest. How are you preventing fires? Surely, I'm not correctly understanding the information.

the thing barely gets warm. you could sit on it on the warm setting. smile

Yes, but paper on top of a constant open electrical heat source for a fur bearing pet? Am I reading the suggestion correctly?

I guess I understand the minimum heat source you are talking about. It would be like a candle/mug warmer. However, I would still not put paper on that and have an animal sit on it as friction, pressure, and weight condense the heat molecule structure. To my mind's eye that equals an active (eternal/open) heat source to build up force against a flammable paper (wood) source to an occupant who is covered in fur.

What about using battery powered heating gloves, mits, scarf? The heat is generated from a closed, insulated heat source. Or, those break and shake heat packs under a blanket? Or, shredded newspaper covered by a piece of plank of wood and a blanket for nesting? Or, an insulated old coat from a Salvation Army? What about a small dog house with a used pet bed?

There is no paper on it. The paper is no where near it. This cat house is HUGE and two stories. It's for five cats, after all.

How are you safeguarding against moisture and electrocution? Mud, water, and snow are conductors of electricity.

I'm bringing these concerns to you out of care and kindness - there is no offense intended in my suggestions.

At one time I was feeding a feral cat. When winter came with below zero temps threatened I made him a litle house out of a cardboard box and insulated the inside with styrofoam sheets. When it got REALLY cold I attached a bit of blanket for a hinged door. He loved it and used it every day. One bitter cold day I put my hand in to see if he was OK and was amazed at how toasty warm it was in there. So if you put in plenty of insulation the cats will do all the heating they need and save the electricity.

Deb, it's under the porch. smile DH has it set up and i trust his knowledge with construction. If I ever write an article about this i will include the specific details.

Claybird that is great on the sheets of insulation. I might do that later. smile

Anyone have any idea on making cheap homemade pet food?

I found a good article on what their requirements are:

http

The most important thing I heard is that you can feed a dog cat food but you cannot feed a cat dog food.

There is a special requirement for cats called Taurine...

That's great info, Burt! Thanks for sharing. smile

I was able to get a free bag of catfood this week by asking for assistance at my local animal control shelter. That was very nice of them.

Anyone ever do that?
Claybird.....when I was a young girl a stray cat followed me home from school. It stayed in my yard but my parents wouldn't allow the cat into the house so I had to make provisions for it outside. It was winter and cold enough to require a shelter for the animal.

I turned over a large clean, new aluminum trash can onto it's side and aimed the opening towards the outside wall of my house, leaving just a couple of inches for the cat to squeeze through to get into the can. Across the top edge of the open side of the can I put a towel or blanket. I put blankets inside for her too. Then I braced both sides of the can with a piece of chopped firewood to prevent the can from rolling in the wind. Of course having the side of the house almost up against the opening of the can was quite a wind buffer too.

That cat used the aluminum garbage can for shelter every day until my parents finally let me bring the cat into the garage to spend nights. It was simple and it worked.

Cassie, that is a great story. The garbage can idea is so simple and creative! I'm glad your parents finally relented about letting you bring her into the garage. What did you set up for her there?
In the garage the cat slept on a stack of my dad's car tires. It was a stack of 4 tires with some blankets piled on top for warmth.

That sounds cozy! Tires work as insulators, so with the blankets that is nice.

My cheap-date cats love crumpled paper balls and misc string as toys. Gotta love em. smile

Jill,

We are looking to add a pet dog into our family so I've started using my couponing skills to stock up on cheap/free dog food/supplies so that we will have a stock ready for the new addition.

Also, I"m going to start doing the same for any free cat food that I can get. I can donate those items to a local shelter. We all need help!
I don't mean to be a killjoy, but typically cheap pet food is very low in nutrition, and contributes to skin and other allergies, impaired immune systems, disease, and shorter lifespans.

Obviously shelters can and should use any pet food available to keep their animals going while trying to find them new homes, but if you are looking to add a pet to your family you should do a little research on pet nutrition. Meat should be the first ingredient in any cat or dog food, not corn and other grains which are just fillers and act as allergens to meat eating animals.

There is nothing frugal about having a healthy pet. If you can't afford to buy better quality food to maintain your pet's health you may want to reconsider getting a pet in the first place. Any vet will back this up. Aim for free and cheap toys, supplies, and accessories, not the food.

Cassie, thank you for your good advice. Proper nutrition makes all the difference in the health and longevity of a beloved pet. smile

I know what Maria is talking about, though. She is talking about using coupons combined with store sales to get free or cheap net prices on decent name brand foods. It's a super-couponing thing and a lot of fun. A lot of work to match things up, but then when you find the right deals you stock up for a long time.
Posted By: Maria - Prime Time TV Re: Frugal pet supplies ideas - 01/26/12 03:42 AM
Cassie,

Jill is correct. I didn't mean "cheap" in the context of normally low priced dog food. I meant it to say cheap by the time I purchase it. For example, combining store sales with coupons allowed me to buy 5 healthy-sized bags of Purina ONE Beyond Chicken and Whole Oat Dog Food for less than a dollar each at Target last week. Their first ingrediant is chicken.

We actually plan on using one type of dog food and sticking with it and we will donate the extra bags however we will first have to decide which brand will be the right brand for our new addition. After that, we will donate the rest.

Posted By: Jilly Re: Frugal pet supplies ideas - 01/26/12 04:08 AM
Maria, you rock! Good on you for the donations to the shelters!

And we have got to stop speaking in shorthand about couponing, i think. wink

Well, i just had a nice thing happen. I befriended someone who runs a cat rescue for sick cats, and they had some extra food donations that their cats would not eat. Weird, finicky cats i guess. But that worked in my favor: the woman gave me three bags of very nice, organic cat food, and two cans of the wet stuff.

So it's worth spreading around town that you are in the market for inexpensive and free sources of pet food. At least among pet people - rescues, shelters, pet shops and boutiques.

Actually, my local pet boutique often has free pet food samples they give me for the asking. Not enough for the cats to live on, but enough to tide them over if I am between bags of the 'bought' stuff.

Another friend asked me to join her for shopping at my ALCO on monday, which is senior citizen day. She gets a 15% discount on everything. So I will go with her and pay her back for buying me this month's cat food with her discount.

So a good idea is finding out where senior discounts are given and making use of those resources!

It also occurs to me that i can buy cheap cuts of chicken and a bag of white rice and crockpot that up as cat food.
Posted By: Jilly Re: Frugal pet supplies ideas - 04/14/12 01:03 AM
Today I discovered my cats like babyfood and whole wheat english muffins. Maybe I can toss some of that in the chicken and rice food for them too. What else might be good in a pot like this?
Posted By: Jilly Re: Frugal pet supplies ideas - 06/02/12 11:04 PM
meh, the cats don't like rice. Fine, cats. wink

Recently I found a whole wave of resources for free cat food and thought i'd share what is going on. I am not recommending begging on the streets for cat food, but if you find yourself in a really tight spot, i am finding others are happy to help out.

Over the last few weeks I've gotten free cat food:

- from my sister, who saw on facebook that I was bottle feeding six baby kittens as an emergency fosterer. She realized that made 12 cats i was supporting and sent me a $20 Walmart gift card for cat food. I have since found a wet nurse for the infants, so i am back to a normal six (five of my own and one feral i feed). This is so incredibly generous of my sister, who barely has enough money of her own. I am thankful!

- With the walmart card, I was able to carpool with another to the nearest walmart and figure out the cheapest price per ounce bag of cat food. With the $20, i could afford two 16 pound bags. Yes, it's not high quality cat food. But it's food. I looked at the bottom shelf and noticed that the ones way in the back on and on the bottom were offering each a 20% extra free amount of cat food, bringing the bags up to around 20 pounds. Basically, between the two bags with the extra percent, I was able to get the equivalent of another half a bag of free cat food. I always recommend looking closely at products to see if the ones in the back are having % more promotionals. You'd be shocked how often this happens, and people don't even know they missed out on the free extras.

- I've been trading some of the many free boxes i get of just-past-edible food (from food pantries) to a cat shelter that they in turn give to their livestock. The cat shelter gives me free bags of donated cat food that their cats won't eat (they give their cats the good stuff). Recently I've gotten about five bags and boxes of various sizes. They also give me goats milk for the babies i bottle feed when they come along. They consider me a foster mom in their program and it works out for them.

- My local animal control often has extra bags of donated cat food and they will give me some when i ask.

- A local pet shop in town always has free small bags of cat food samples and once a month i go in and ask for some. they usually give me around six little sample bags. Those I keep for the emergency days when I am in between cat food and have no cash.

- my ALCO is having a sale this weekend where if you spend $50 you get a $10 shopping card. On Sunday, my food stamps go thruogh for June. My plan is to go in and get $50 worth of food products with the food stamps and get my $10 free card...and in turn use THAT for a nice big bag of cat food.

- There are ways to use 'free money' at Walgreens and CVS to also get free ct food. It's rather complicated to learn all their rules, but if you look at their weekly circulars you can find Extra Bucks and Register Rewards deals. If you work those right, you can get free money to spend on pet food.

- you can often do this with supermarkets too when they have a catalina special. Those are the long coupons that spit out of the machine by the register.

I assume these ideas can be adapted for dog food or whatever. I really think the produce barter idea for livestock has potential, and it also keeps important soil nutrients out of the landfills.

Well, that worked awesome! I used my food stamps to buy food at ALCO and got my $10 shopping card. I can use that for cat food.

I'll be waiting until they have 30% off one item coupon, and then get a nice big bag for free. I'll have a couple bucks leftover for some wood glue.
