New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/04/02 10:06 PM

Prize:

This month's prize is a pair of handmade miniature ladderback maple twig chairs. They stand approximately 12 inches high and are about 4 1/2 inches wide. Handmade by me no less! (Candles and plant not included). The trivia contest winner will email me his/her address and the prize will be shipped out via USPS within 14 days of the end of the contest. The postage will be paid by me, your illustrious host. Please don't post your address in the forum.

Rules:

The first one to answer ten trivia questions correctly will win this month's prize. This contest is open to anyone living in the US with the exception of RI, NY, and FL. Unfortunately, if you live in Rhode Island, New York, or Florida you are not eligible to win since I'd have to register with the contest with that state. Also, do not edit your posts as I will not count those as correct ansers. If you make a mistake in a post, simply repost it.

Here is the first trivia question:

Rhode Island can claim a number of sports firsts. Among them: the first polo game to be played in America (1876)

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/13/02 05:09 PM

Water Polo was begun in the U.S. in Boston, MASS.
Horse Polo, I must agree, was started in 1876 in New York City at Dickel's Riding Academy.
And, bicycle polo was brought to the U.S. in 1897 as a conditioning game for horse polo players.

What is the book you are writing??????
Posted By: Kate Ruth

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/18/02 10:48 PM

It is a fictional children's series about children's dreams and a magical land where these dreams are answered.

I wrote it with my son (then 6) and sent it out to publishers. After getting TONS of rejections, I packed it away. Just recently, I came across a publisher and sent them a synopsis. They requested a look and have decided to publish it...as long as I get the completed manuscript into them by deadline for editing, etc.,!!!

It has potential they say. Woo hoo! For other books, a show, etc., BUT, we will see - gots to get the book done first! LOL -- FOCUS, Kitty!

Which New England state requires people to have a liquor ID to purchase alcohol?
Posted By: kssmul

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/19/02 10:10 PM

Not sure if this is what you are looking for.

Massachusettes requires either a Massachusetts Drivers Licence or a Massachusetts Liquor ID to purchase alcohol .... this law seems to have been put into place for College students from other states.

Maine has a similar law.

I couldn't find reference to it being the only for of id necessary to purchase alcohol.
Posted By: Jeanne Egbosiuba Ukwendu

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/19/02 11:41 PM

ummmm.... nope!

This state will not allow you to buy alcohol (except at a bar) unless you have this liquor license. So, if someone is from another state they can't buy alcohol, even with a valid drivers license.

Well, you are down to four states - keep guessing

He was also in "Triggermen" (2002)this year;
is starring in the new TV series "Boomtown" as Detective Joel Stevens it premieres Sept. 29 NBC's Boomtown - AND he has a movie coming out in 2003 -"Dreamcatcher" a Horror/SciFi based on Stephen King's writing. (It is in post-production as we speak.)

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/28/02 02:55 AM

I was involved in an accident with one of the Wahlbergs on the South East Expressway on my way into see a Baryshnakof (sp?) performance in May of 1998. It was a 3 vehicle accident ... Wahlberg hit my car. He claimed the other driver hit him on purpose forcing him into me. The state trouper at the scene said Wahlberg was at fault. My car had $8,000 damage. His shiney Red truck barely had a scratch. I have to say however he was quite polite. I didn't realize who the Wahlbergs were until sometime later and we missed 1/2 the Baryshnakof performance.
Posted By: Kate Ruth

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/28/02 03:00 AM

They are a big family in Boston - Mark and Donnie have six other siblings!! Quite a bunch!!

Hope you are okay after the accident in '98, glad to hear the Wahlberg you met with in so untimely a manner was polite. They do NOT usually have the "polite" reputation - unfortunately.
Posted By: kssmul

Re: New England Trivia Contest for September - 09/28/02 08:50 PM

I can't remember which one it was but yes they are a big family. There was an arrogance about the "kid" ... you know the kind that comes from not having to struggle cuz everything is given to you on a silver platter. But, he was polite to me and the investigating office even though he disagreed with the officer's assessment of fault. Fortunately, no-one was injured but my car did take the brunt of the accident. 2nd BIG accident with that car and it was mearly a year old. Between the two, there was more damage than the original price of the car. But it got put back together again and still runs great. Gotta love those Hondas. I was still fighting the insurance company on some of it when I moved to WNC. I'm not sure they ever got it settled but I was finally made whole.

I'm going to guess Connecticut, because I recall something about a New Haven chocolatier "discovering" lollipops with chocolate, and the idea evolving to use with hard candies. (mmm...chocolate lollipops...!)

Though, if you listen to the side of my family from Wisconsin, an 'east coast' candymaker called upon a WI company to create a lollipop making machine, so they consider WI to be the home of the lollipop

Dina, that's right! & of course, you can jump right in. We aren't exclusive at all!

Just be sure to not edit your message next time - technically, I shouldn't take those answers, but since you are new, I'll count it

Here's the current score:

Kitty 9
Cheryl 8
Chris 1
Dina 1

That's right Kitty! I knew he was a doctor. I found out about him while watching "Liberty's Kids" on PBS with my daughter

Anyway, that makes 10 correct answers for Kitty so she will receive the two chairs in the mail.

Kitty, I still have your address in my files from the last time. I'll get your prize out in the mail by mid-week.
