Any interesting things to do on Block Island? I haven't been there since I was 16 or so ...

I haven't been to Block Island, yet. Here is a webpage that lists all kind of touristy things along with how to get on & off the Island - assuming you want to leave, that is.

That's great, thanks!

Just a quick comment here ..

The ferry ride out to Block Island is usually rough even on a good day ... so if you are prone to motion sickness take some dramemine(sp?) before you go. Coming back is much smoother.

Is that the slow ferry or the fast ferry? The times we've been to Nantucket we took the fast ferry (i.e. a catamaran type thing) and it was very smooth. I was planning on taking the fast ferry to Block Island and assumed it'd be about the same ...?

Not sure if that will make a difference ... the waters between mainland and Block Island tend to be choppier then those out to Nantucket and the Vineyard ... not sure why. All I know is every time I've gone out to BI ... it's been a choppy ride out and smooth coming in and I get motions sickness easily.

Thanks for the info Chris. I never gave that a thought. I did look at the prices for the ferries & thought they were quite reasonable. Was thinking that maybe I'd get over there with my husband & we'd rent a moped for the day. I'd probably take the slow ferry which takes an hour versus the fast one which is 1/2 an hour. It's not a huge time difference in my opinion.

It's a beautiful trip over there and back ... we only went to the beach, and went through the shops the three times I've been there in recent years. The friend I was with is older and not much into the hiking and biking I would have wanted to do. So I've not seen much of the island. LOL!

I'm going to look into making a trek over to the Island. My guess is that I'm about a 2 to 3 hour drive to where the ferry is. At that point is would be worth finding a place to stay over on a Friday night on the mainland & venture over to Block Island on Saturday.

Right now I'm thinking September after Labor Day...

I biked when I went with my mom, but this time I think mopedding would be fun - we'd be going with a friend that isn't a biker. I suppose just roaming around the island and then having dinner there would be fun. I think also that there's a winery there now, which is part of my incentive

Jeanne ...
Whether you ferry out of Point Judith or Newport there are lots of places to stay and things to see in the area ... of course you could spend a week in Newport alone and enjoy everything there is to see and do ... I would recommend strongly if you have to drive that long to get down there..try to get over to BeaverTail to the lighthouse ... the point there is just beautiful and peaceful. BeaverTail is in Jamestown (tiny island that is bridged from Narragansett on one side and Newport on the other. One of my favorite places in RI.

I enjoy Newport a lot - I love the Japanese culture and they have a cool black ships festival every fall. Their wine festival last month was also very fun. The mansions of course are a great treat to go visit. They have some very delicious (but rather expensive) restaurants too ... Christie's is one I've been to recently that was tasty.

I just went "lighthouse collecting" yesterday. That is going to take pictures of as many lighthouses as I could. I started in Newburyport, MA and worked my way south. We (my husband & I) ended up spending more time on Cape Ann than we expected too. We took pictures of 9 lighthouses. Eventually, we will get into RI for lighthouse collecting. If we are near a lighthouse when we go on our Block Island trip, you better believe we'll do out best to go see the lighthouse

I just put up the picture of the Newburyport Rear Range Light which is currently on my front page.

Yup, I've poked through that one. There is a few really good lighthouse sites. I use them to figure which lighthouses are in the area that I may be in so I can get a few pictures. I have a, what I hope is complete, list of lighthouses at my site under the Odds & Ends category.
