There are many favorite recipes that come from southern Appalachia. Old world recipes that the colonists brought with them have become great dishes for the holiday season. Two of these recipes are Trifle, a layered desert, and Tipsy Cake, a dessert laced with brandy or rum.

You can get the recipes and some history on these desserts at the following link:

Enjoy! And Happy Holidays to all. smile
Both of these recipes sound delicious, Phyllis!
Thanks, Debbie. The Trifle is very versatile with choice of fresh or frozen/thawed fruits. The more berries one uses, the more colorful and pretty the dessert is, especially when layered nicely in a glass trifle bowl.

I have had tipsy cake several times, and, depending on the cook, one can get quite tipsy if too much is eaten. I had some several years ago at the opening of a new casino restaurant and it was so good. I started feeling very festive and had more cake because it was so good with my coffee. My crazy brother neglected to tell me there was rum in the cake. Brother got me home, ok, but, I do not know how I managed to walk out of the casino in an upright condition. I do remember telling everyone I passed that "you gotta try that cake!" wink
