We are all saddened by the tragedy in Connecticut today. It is difficult to comprehend why such tragedies transpire.

Your daughter may be hearing about this and may have questions and concerns regarding this incident. I encourage you to reassure your daughter of the commitment of her school system in assuring she has a safe learning environment.

Remain calm as you discuss what has happened. Because of this new tragedy the schools are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of children.

Thank you for helping her understand.

Remember to keep your emotions in tack while answering questions or explaining what happened. I encourage you to tell your children of the tragedy to make them aware of the severity of the situation. I also encourage you to ask for their assistance in seeing or hearing of any suspicious behavior from anybody. I would also encourage you to make them feel safe by mentioning that all schools are taking all necessary precautions to ensure that they have a safe and secure learning environment. Make sure your daughter or child can speak freely when they need to express their concern or fear about the situation. Reassuring their fears will allow them to return to school with confidence in the school systems protection. It will also allow them to sleep easy knowing that we as a parent or school system will ensure their safety. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. If anyone has any questions or concerns on the matter please feel free to speak. This is a family site - we will be here for assistance.

Let your daughter know that her fear is normal and that it's okay to be sad or even frightened that it might happen to her. In that same sentence make sure you reassure her that our school system is doing everything in their power to make sure kids continue to learn in a safe environment. Also, reassure your daughter that the gunman that caused this incident is no longer a threat. Reassure her of her safety and of the schools. Our children rely on us to define the world as it is. Choose your words carefully, and help her understand so that she can get back to a routine and add normal back into her life. Remind her that all of her emotions are normal reactions.
