Dealing with artistic differences - 09/28/06 07:26 PM
Ok, I need some advice on how to deal with artistic differences in my band. Recently my band got a guitar player, we are a semi-progressive band, whom has wanted to go more progressive, and technical.
The problem is, our somewhat new guitar player, and I have very different ways of approaching music. It's not until about a month and a half later, that I realized (and feel stupid for not seeing this sooner) that he and I have huge differences of artistic direction. He writes music that is a combination of simple thrash, and somewhat poppy metal. I can sing that style, but I'm enjoying it less and less, I enjoy singing very melodic and intracate progressive music.
I've done enough death metal, and basic thrash in the past to be tired of it. So clearly his style and mine clash.
I made it clear that we had artistic differences, and discussed the issue with him, but neither of us came to any conclusions, except that it could be a problem. I don't know how to deal with this, I don't want to kick him out, because I really like him as a person, and because I'm worried about getting on the rest of my band's bad side (though their artistic direction is a bit closer to mine than his) but at the same time I'm wanting to go in a musical direction that I'm not so sure he will really enjoy doing (though he said he's willing to try). So I guess I just can't make a decision on what to do, and any advice, or insight on how to perhaps deal with this issue would be appreciated.
