I found an article about Girl Scouts at Time.com (which was published today), that I think readers of this forum may find of interest.

More Than Just Cookies: Rethinking the Girl Scouts

That was great article! i never thought about that
As a Girl Scout leader, I appreciate that the article highlights the changes going on and reasons for those changes. We in Washington State have combined councils and are enjoying the more "condensed" leadership. To my knowledge we are not closing camps at the moment.
Girl Scouts needs parent involvement and long-term commitment. If the parent wants to drop off their daughter and go grocery shopping, this may not be an ideal fit. Further, if a girl just sees Girl Scouts as something she can do between soccer and softball season, she may want to go for basketball rather than Scouts.
We work with our girls for long-term goals which allow them to keep focused on projects and see them through.
