On Thursday night I went to the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England. It was for the awards for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year.

Here is the overall winner and what a gorgeous picture it is. It was taken in California and in the foreground is an ancient bristlecone pine. But the light from the stars started on its journey to Earth long before even these trees began to grow nearly five thousand years ago.

I'll be writing more about the exhibition which is now open to anyone visiting London - and online for those that aren't - but I thought I would share this with you.
Here is some more information about this fantastic exhibition, including how to see it online, more astronomy photography and some how-to guides for anyone who wants to try out some astrophotography. It's great stuff and even a child can do it - as witness the entries for the Young Astronomy Photographer. Royal Greenwich Observatory Photography
