One of my Walmart plants has what looks like 2 new plants growing at the top of an old stem. They have roots of their own.

Should I cut the old stem off and pot these two together with the old stem or separate them. Or should I cut them from the old stem where they join and then pot them.....together or separate?

They are growing vigorously. I am SCARED to do anything!!!!!!!

Hi newbie here...did you get a reply to this ?? I have the same ?. Recently acquired an orchid from my aunt. It has bloomed and the flowers have dried up. there is a new plant up there with an aerial root. Now..what do I do? how should this plant be cut off? or should it? would love to make a new plant out of this baby orchid. Pleeaaase any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What you have here is called a "keiki" or baby plant. When the roots are about one and a half inches long (4 cm) cut off the baby plant and put it in a small pot of its own. Be sure that you use orchid potting soil. Baby plants need a bit mor water than mature plants, so I always put a bit of sphagnum moss around the bottom.

Congrats on your keiki's!!! I would be be beside my self!! I have a phael I bought from a private orchid breeder 3 years ago, in bloom, and it has taken me 2 years to get it to rebloom. I would love to see babys come out on my bloom stalk..You are so lucky!! you can get a lot of good info about caring for your orchids here. Susan...does the spaghnum go in the bottom of the pot or on top of the orchid potting soil? The aerial root is probably 3-4" long. Hope it will go into the pot without breaking. When I received the plant (it's an orphan <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ), bought some orchid potting soil (looks like bark mulch) and some spaghnum for some reason and orchid ferilizer. I mixed up some fert. in a spray bottle and have been spraying the leaves and soil once a week. Also set this on our covered patio for humidity etc. I am in Texas (Bryan/College Station)

I have a phalenopsis that is going down fast! I am not sure what I have done wrong...as I have keikis and alot of new growth on most my other plants.

I repotted this plant in late summer when I moved from Honolulu to San Francisco. It had not grown any but seemed to be putting out new roots until recently the bottom leaves have begun to turn yellow and brown and fall away!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I put the sphagnum on the top of the bark.

My immediate thought is that the temperature and climate change between Honolulu and San Francisco may be the problem with the Phal. It's used to warm weather and SF is much colder. You might try a warmer spot in the house.

Paphs just need time to grow, Piero. Give it light (no direct sun), air movement, humidity and a good place to live and it should grow for you!
