Hey Everyone,

I have been throwing up for the past day or so. What triggers it is walking, taking medication, eating. I was diagnosed in my teens with GERD, in my earlie adult Diabetes (type two, 15 years old I was diagnosed with Depression. When I wake up I feel sick to my stomach then when I take my pills after I feel better then its when i eat or exercise I throw up. I checked my glucose level and it was 149. Which isnt high levels of diabetes. Could it be either Uncontrolled GERD or Stress?

Hi KLW,

It sounds like you are on a lot of meds. Please ask your doctor or pharmasist if any of your drug combinations are making you sick to your stomach.

Incidentally, some antidepressants can cause GERD, and vomitting can be a symptom of GERD. Also, medications for GERD can make you feel better temporarily, but in the long run worsen the condition.

Either way, do consult your doctor as your vomiting could be a serious symptom. If you are not comfortable with what he tells you, get a second opinion. Don't ever be afraid of hurting your doctors feelings, KLW. Your health is top priority and you are what matters most!

Good, KLW! Please do share what happens if you feel comfortable doing so. You have support here!

I found out what is wrong with me. Im having nasel drainage in the back of my throat and its like a green color. She said you can get sick from that and caugh up acid from it. It can make you caugh and get nauseated.

It sounds like you have a sinus infection, KLW. Green phlem indicates infection. Were you presribed antibiotics? If so, please make sure you take 3 probiotic pills per day to restore your intestinal bacteria. Intestinal bacteria supports the immune system and antibiotics kill intestinal bacteria. Some people eat yogurt which has acidopholus in it. Acidopholus is a probiotic, but it is only one. There are many that get killed off and all need to be replaced.

If you were not told that you have an infection and given antibiocs for it, I would seriously advise that you get a second opinion.

I hope you keep us informed and that you get well soon!

I have a sinus headache. I got a second opinon yesterday and she put me on Amoxicillin 875mg twice daily.

I'm sorry that you are sick with a sinus infection. But I'm glad that you are getting treated.

Make sure you take your probiotics so that you can stay well once you get well!

I found out what is wrong. They say its acid refelx or GERD thats causing the nausea the whole time. They put me on Protonix which is a PPI. Its suppost to heal your stomach lining.
Posted By: Shannon L. Wolf Re: Nausea - 02/27/08 05:16 PM
I'm sorry to say that PPI's do not heal the stomach lining. Before taking these prescriptions I recommend slippery elm tea. You take 1 tablespoon (or a little less) of slippery elm powder (available at health food stores) and a teaspoon or less of honey and stir them into warm (not hot) water. This coats and heals the esophagus and stomach lining. It is not exactly a tasty concoction, but it really works for me. Also try Aloe Vera capsules and marshmallow herb (not the roasting kind!) I always recommend you see a licensed practitioner for dose recommendations.

I am working on an article on holistic answers to heartburn.

Please see my article on meds for GERD:

Can't wait for the holistic answers to heartburn....

Do you have any holistic suggestions for IBS? Would the slippery elm help any?

My fiance is very sensitive to his environment anyway with allergies and such. He has cronic IBS with both bloating and diarhea on a daily basis. He has been contemplating aloe juice. He is against medications but pro-natural remedies.

Hi Karen,

I'm not a big fan of meds either.

Yes slippery elm will help IBS. It coats and heals the entire GI tract. Absolutely have your husband give it a try. I also found that fennel tea is very soothing. And meditation can make a huge difference. I recommend the book "The 4 Agreements" which helps you become aware that the anxiety that you feel isn't as real as you think it is.

I would stay away from the Aloe, though. Aloe can increase colon motility which can feel crampy. Aloe and can also loosen the bowls, which in a nutshell tells you that it will make his condition worse. What is good for the stomach and LES is not always good for conditions of the colon, so I'm glad you asked.

I am working on an article for IBS natural cures. You may also be particularly interested in the article I have in mind connecting IBS with the supernatural. (How daring is that?)

So tell me, what do you see in my future? wink

PROTONIX is a prescription drug that is used to treat and maintain healing of erosive acid reflux disease, also known as erosive GERD (breaks in the lining of the esophagus), and relieve associated symptoms that may include frequent and persistent heartburn and stomach acid backup. Most patients heal within 8 weeks of treatment. Doctors may prescribe PROTONIX beyond 8 weeks to maintain healing or to prevent a recurrence of your symptoms. Controlled studies did not extend beyond 12 months.

KLW,

Do you happen to be taking Byetta? (An injectable drug to lower BG but it is not insulin.) I am also a Type 2 diabetic with GERD and when i took Byetta i was sick as a dog. That is a side effect of Byetta but for many people that wears off after a short term. It only got worse for me.

Im on Gylburide, Not Byetta
Posted By: patd Re: Nausea - 02/28/08 05:01 PM
I have taken and am taking Glyburide due to the fact that i can't tolerate Byetta but i've not had problems with that. I *think* i remember taking a GERD med before Protonix that i had a problem with but i don't remember for sure. Maybe there is a different med you could take that you would tolerate better. God, i really feel for you cuz i remember how completely horrible i felt on Byetta and how unpredictable my ability to keep food down was. When i was on Byetta and threw up it was like i was throwing up 2 days worth of whatever food i had eaten...i could never believe the amount. It was horrible. I really hope you can figure it out.

Hugs to you,
pat

This is an excellent quote and very true. Many medications can cause GERD by relaxing the LED (lower esophageal sphincter)and it sounds like you are on one of them. A healthy LED allows food to enter the stomach, then tightens back up. When the LED is relaxed, stomach acid can splash back up from the stomach causing the esophagus to burn.

But here's the rub, and it doesn't please me to say this: PPi's inhibit the production of stomach acid, so that there is less of it to splash back up allowing the esophagus to heal. Here is the red flag: We need our stomach acid to properly digest our food. If we can't digest our food quickly enough it sits in the stomach for longer than it should. When this happens, the LED relaxes. The LED can only then remain healed as long as the acid remains in a reduced state. The burns or lesions are "healed" but the LED is perpetually relaxed and your food under-digested. In other words, in most cases, you will be dependant on the PPi's to maintain a healed esophagus and in turn your LED cannot tighten up to protect the esophagus from the acid. So in the long run, PPi's cause acid reflux. Any one who has been on them for any length of time and tries to stop taking them will be in instant and perpetual agony. Besides acid reflux or GERD, long term use of PPi's can lead to an inflamed stomach lining and many other new health problems, including the dependency on acid reducers for life.

As I said, it doesn't make me happy to say this! I am painstakenly trying to get off of these meds. I used to have a burning in my stomach for years, which was probably H pilori. I never had acid reflux until I started taking acid reducers. When I learned the way these meds actually work I was stunned. This is why I caution everyone to try holistic approaches for acid reflux that heal the esophagus without harming the LED or stomach lining.

Of course everyone has free will. But as the saying goes "knowledge is power!"

Thanks for the information Shay! I will be sure to pass it on.

BTW about tying the supernatural to IBS. Hubby says what happens to him after a milkshake or piece of pizza IS supernatural...lol whistle

My pleasure, Eleise. You are too funny! grin

It's interesting that the foods you mentioned are dairy based. I wonder if he is lactose intolerant?

Hi, I have been reading the post here with great interst. 2 weeks ago i had a Novasure proceedure (happy with the treatment and chatted to people on her for advice) The trouble is i have been feeling so unwell after the treatment with sickness dizzyness and general unwellness that i have been back to the Doctor twice since the surgery. The 1st time she thought i had 2 infections and put me on 2 kinds of antibiotics with the warning i would have an upset stomach. Today i had to go back, i feel soooo sick all the time and the bloatedness is incredible, she (Doc) thinks the surgery has done this to my stomach. My problem is that i have had this nausea happen to me last October which has had no tie into any surgery!......i believe i have a seperate problem here...........the symptoms are huge bloating to the point i cant wear my jeans, sickness, acid, heartburn, nausea after every morsel im eating, bloatedness after 1 cup of coffee, the feeling that im hungry all the time and total misery! Whats going on here? Im at a total loss of what to do or where to start, i think my diet needs a complete overhaul (i dont drink or eat spicey foods, heavens no!) i had the novasure treatment after 15 yrs of bad periods 7 of which i spent on anti-imflamatory tablets, also anti-inflams for arthritis in the past and im convinced they have damaged my stomach somehow......i live in the uk and getting to the bottom of these problems could be a long haul, i need to self help now because im in misery here. Am i allergic to something? have i got an intolerance? Im just not sure whats doing this at all. Thanks a lot Shaz

Hi Shaz,

I have retired from editorship of the Stomach Issues forum (formerly Shay_LoveYourTummy,) but since the slot hasn't been filled yet I'd be happy to offer my input.

It sounds like there are a few different things going on, here. As for the stomach problems post Novasure (I'm not a big fan of Novasure for many, many reasons) you are spot on with your feelings that the anti-inflammatory drugs are causing your stomach pain. These drugs can and do cause stomach ulcers and bleeding - also antibiotics cause horrible problems with the colon.

So, your diet is most likely not the cause of your problems, but the meds they put you on after your surgery. I am so very sorry you are going through this, Shaz. None of it was/is necessary.

So, what I most highly recommend is that you get to an acupuncturist as soon as you possibly can. Do you have any in your area? In the mean time, it is essential that you get some probiotics into your system to reverse the damage that the antibiotics have caused in your colon. You can get them at health food stores or online. If they are too expensive, the next best thing is yogurt, and lots of it. I have an article here in the Stomach Issues Site archives called "The Hidden Dangers of Antibiotics" - if you are interested, I believe it's under the Conventional Medicine header.

Also, there are on-going threads in the GYN Site about Novasure. A few women have complained of horrible bloating, and as I understand it, blood can build up in the uterus after the procedure. I have posted there twice urging women not to get this procedure, as acupuncture can quickly and easily remedy all uterine problems. A good friend of mine has had horrific periods for 3 years. About a month ago, after her doctor recommended Novasure, I finally convinced her to get acupuncture. She has gone from periods that last for 3 weeks out of every month, down to two days per week. As she continues, they will become normal again. Shaz, I feel so disheartened that so many women believe in what their doctors tell them, and have no idea that there are safe, noninvasive ways to heal the body. But, you can heal now, even after your Novasure. Do consult an acupuncturist soon. My best wishes go out to you.

Shay
