Almost 200 whales and several dolphins have stranded themselves on a beach on Tasmania's King Island :( About 194 pilot whales and six or seven bottlenose dolphins began stranding on Naracoopa Beach on King Island, about halfway between Tasmania and Victoria, from 7.30pm AEDT last night. There are experts and volunteers on the scene attempting to keep them alive at the moment. OMG this is so sad :( Those poor beautiful animals. Apparently it is unusual for whales and dolphins to beach themselves together :(

I was watching the news about this this morning. So many of them died. One thought was that human activities are interrupting their sonar. I have read illness also. Only 54 survived this beaching. What do you think happened?

Oh wow did it make the news in the US? It is just SO very sad :( I am not sure at all what happened, I do agree with the theories it could be caused by human intervention. Military sonar is one thing that is thought to cause beachings, but good luck ever getting anyone to admit that was the cause I'd say!! Who knows, the other theories include climate change due to rising water temperatures and just "an accident" on the whales part, but I don't think for one moment that 2 amazing species can beach themselves by accident!!

We have beachings here too. Some theories include illness as well. Perhaps someone will investigate the huge number killed and be able to determine what caused this to happen.

Yep, they are doing exactly that. They have called for a large investigation to try and discover the cause and why 2 species beached at once. Here's hoping they can help stop it happening again :(
