Hi...Wow Im glad someone started a Martial arts section!! I practice American karate, and just tested for my black belt in July. Would love to hear what kind of martial arts you do.
First off, congratulations Pamp! It's a big accomplishment becoming a black belt.

My style is Pai Lum Tao. Within our style we have three paths, Kenpo Karate, Pai Lum Kung Fu, and Pai Yung Tai Chi. I currently hold my black is Pai Yung Tai Chi but I'm also working up the other two ladders.

I have an article coming out on Monday about Karate. I'd love to know what you think and if you're interested to learn more about where you learn.

if anyone is still hosting this or keeping tabs on the subjects i would like to ask a question.

i have a disability involving my legs, with limited movement of one ankle, 3 missing ribs and a knee injury. all over 10 years old.

i was curious to know if there was a particularly beneficial martial art form i should get into? i have never taken classes, although i can no longer ignore the potential gain afforded by them.
Hi mel'swaterbabies,

Yes. I'm still here and hosting. Sorry for the delay, had a few days off here for the weekend.

First of all, definitely speak with your doctor before doing anything. You have some pretty serious injuries there and it's always good to keep your doctor updated on things you are doing.

Now with that said, there are some things you can do which can be beneficial. But you need to find the right instructor who first and formost recognizes your limits and doesn't push beyond those.

Tai Chi is one of the forms that might be beneficial. You'll have to take it cautiously though, find an instructor that has experience working with different ailments. He/she'll want to focus on your breathing and hand movements rather than the total body as most practionaires do.

A variation on a theme is Qi Gong exercise. Qi Gong is normall a part of Tai Chi training. The concept, in general terms, is to use breathing and natural body sounds to help the body heal. Again, it's very important to find someone that has worked with different ailments before. With your missing ribs, you may find some of the breathing difficult.

Meditation and various relaxation techniques that you'll normally find in a number of the books and videos that are associated with Tai Chi and Qi Gong might also prove helpful to relax your pain.

Overall, you need to know your body and listen to it. If you do something in Martial Arts and it's screaming in pain, stop. Don't strain your body. And keep tabs with your doctor.

I hope this helped, please let me know if I can be of more help or if you feel more comfortable, feel free to email me and we can chat some more.

Greetings!

I have been married to a martial artist for 14 years. I run the office and business aspects of his martial arts school which is now heading into it's third year of operation.

My husband has trained since he was a child and offers instruction in Tang Soo Do, Hap Ki Do and weapons. He holds black belt ranks in other styles besides Tang Soo Do.

I prefer being his support person to actually training. But I love some of the beliefs and culture that has been a part of his training. I feel these have been beneficial in our lives.
XLadyRogue,

Thanks for stopping by and what an adorable little one you have pictured there! I think your husband is very lucky to have you and should thank you daily for the work you do. I know first hand that running a school is not easy. In our system, wives who run businesses like you do deserve honor, which is why they have a special title, Simo, for them.

I've seen some Tang Soo Do in my time, though I wish more. It's very powerful art. Perhaps if he's up to it, I'd love to interview him in the future.

Good morning,

Thanks for the kind words.

I am sure my husband would be happy to share his thoughts with you. That's part of his desire to teach....to continue passing what was taught and shared with him.
