Ralf Nadar Calls for Ending Athletic Scholarships
I think it's worth it for diversity reasons to help support all students with all varieties of skills to get into college. Some kids are great at math. That's fine! But some kids are great at art, and some kids are great at gymnastics. Each kid should have a chance to shine and reach their goals.
My concern with eliminating athletic scholarships would be that schools would try that much hard to offer less above-board incentives to recruit student athletes.
I do wish that there were more academic merit scholarships or other merit scholarships -- music or art. They exist, but are dwarfed by the athletic scholarships.
You make a good point. Some colleges may be tempted to do that. Athletics (some of them anyway) bring in the big bucks, whereas art and music do not typically bring in the same amount of money.
