The Otty Sanchez case - 08/20/09 05:41 PM
Gina, thank you for posting about Otty Sanchez. Absolutely tragic all round.
There's no denying that what she did was horrific - but when I read the story two things came to mind. "Where is the baby's father?" and "I'll be amazed if she isn't severely mentally ill". I suppose it could be argued that Otty Sanchez was a ticking time bomb - I don't doubt the ball was dropped by medical professionals and CPS at some stage.
But as for the father demanding the death penalty for her and screaming about how she killed his son - the mind boggles! Sounds like a guilty conscience after the fact. If only he'd shown that level of concern when he walked out on her, leaving her alone with the infant, despite being well aware of her history of schizophrenia and her diagnosis of post partum psychosis. On some level, he must know he failed big time and that's why he's making so much noise.
This tragic case illustrates that it may be 2009, yet women are held to far higher parenting standards than men and expected to get on with it. Even if they are schizophrenic and psychotic and clearly unable to cope.
