What is a Leatherstocking?

I believe they are refering in reference to lederhosen (German name for the shorts with suspenders that the German men wear. Translation turns it into leather stocking...leder = leather and hosen = stockings in German. I don't believe there really is such a thing as leather stockings. Leather stocking area is in the Adirondacks in CNY.
