What's your favorite movie soundtrack?

My favorites are Gypsy(1962) and Xanadu (1980).

Xanadu is now a musical!

That was a great soundtrack in it's day -- Xanadu!

"The 5th Element" is my favorite - aittle bit of everything.
Posted By: Michelle - Short Stories Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/07/07 04:46 PM
I love that movie. I love the blue woman. She has the most awesome voice. That is a great movie! I just bought "Rent" the DVD at Kroger because they were buy one get one free and my husband bought, "Caddy Shack". I hear Rent has a wonderful soundtrack as well.
Posted By: Chelle - Marriage Editor Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/08/07 12:18 AM
Doesn't that have Taye Diggs in it? If so, who cares if the soundtrack is good! grin

Michelle!!!!
However, I agree.

Movie Soundtracks .....my particular interest.

My favorite musical is West Side Story. That aside, let me recommend John Barry (Out of Africa, and the one with Christopher Reeve...forgot it temporarily...Somewhere out of Time?) John Williams (Empire of the Sun), Hans Zimmer (The Thin Red Line), anything by Ennnio Morricone (especially Cinema Paradiso), and a host of others too numerous too mention.
Posted By: Michelle - Short Stories Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/08/07 12:33 PM
Hi Terrence!
Hans Zimmer is awesome. You know where you can find great music? The soundtracks they play on some of the documentary specials they play on the History channel and such. I've also heard some great backtracks on the Travel Channel.
Posted By: joanj Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/08/07 12:39 PM
Michelle, I love the soundtracks on the History Channel and Travel channel as well.

My all time favorite soundtrack composer is James Horner who did Braveheart and Titanic. He also did Legends of the Fall, Apollo 13 and some others. Really beautiful!
Posted By: Michelle - Short Stories Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/08/07 02:18 PM
I'm also into music played on commercials. I loved the music from the Geico commercial with the caveman walking in the airport.

Hello Michelle and Joanj,

Ha, ha !! I love the music on the Geico commercial when he is at the airport too. No words are said. Classic !! I just found out the other day that the firm which won the Geico account is a small place in Virginia......the Madison Ave. ad execs were laughing at them when they made their pitch...who is laughing now?

I like James Horner too. Braveheart is one of my favorites. He also did Forest Gump.....which is fantastic. Hans Zimmer also did Gladiator....really, really good.

I always thought that music on the Geico commercial sounded like 70s porn music.

Lisa - you do have a point.

Terrence - I love that a small firm got the account. That is classic.

Does anyone else have any favorite soundtracks? I am a movie buff and I would love to hear from anyone who has a favorite film composer. Film is what got me into Classical music because so many inspirational pieces used in movies led me to the original artist. And when I now listen to the Classic piece, I remember a certain scene or movie. It just adds to my enjoyment of the music. I know this is a backwards way of enjoying the Classics, but "hey" ...whatever works right? Music is so universal and as long as you enjoy it for whatever reason, it will live on.
Posted By: Michelle - Short Stories Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/15/07 02:49 AM
Terrence - you are so right! I mean, music is a language as far as I'm concerned. It's the one thing that can heal, can tear down walls, I could go on and on, but yes, I agree.

Star Wars of course was my first big soundtrack. I was a senior in high school when the movie came out. JUST TOLD MY AGE.

Ummm . . . it's late, so I'm going to have to think some more on this. You know, of course, I love a lot of Pop soundtracks, "Pretty in Pink", Coyote Ugly, .....

Okay, I'm have to sleep and think and come back!

Posted By: Chelle - Marriage Editor Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/15/07 02:58 AM
OK - so here's one that's so not classical, but I played the heck out of it when I was in high school - "Top Gun"! "playin' with the Boys" and "Take My Breath Away", I could probably still cing those from heart, LOL!

(BTW, forgive the typos, cut my finger making dinner tonight, and the stupid bandaid keeps hitting 2 keys at once. I'm getting tired of backspacing. :/)
Posted By: Terrence Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/15/07 11:30 PM
One particular piece comes to mind....it was used in "Platoon". It's about the Vietnam War and was made in 1986 by Oliver Stone starring Charlie Sheen. Anyway, throughout the movie was "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber. It's beautiful, yet haunting and sad.

BellaHarmony...I hope your fingers are healing !!!

How about "Pretty Woman"!!!!
I loved Top Gun by the way!
Oops, did we forget "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever"!

OMG! How did we miss those?

I was on the Academy Awards site when I was researching the "Scifi Symphony" article, and I noticed that up until 1961 there was a whole separate section for musicals' scores as opposed to drama or comedy. Then it switched to original score as opposed to adaptation (with about a 4-5 year switch back in the late 60's with the renewed popularity of musicals thanks to Barbara!) and back again to original/adaptation.

Just thought it was interesting.

Okay, so I love the soundtrack from the movie "Michael" with John Travolta.

I'm a big Hans Zimmer fan. There's this one piece on the True Romance soundtrack ("You're So Cool") that has to be one of the happiest songs of all time. smile

As far as complete soundtracks go, though, my favorite is from the movie Singles.
Posted By: Michelle - Short Stories Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/18/07 12:57 AM
Wow, it's like going down memory lane. Singles - I haven't thought about that movie for a long time. I also like the track from "Blast from the Past".
Posted By: Terrence Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/19/07 12:00 AM
Have you checked out Blade Runner by Vangelis? Another awesome soundtrack. It really helps if you know the movies because the music adds so much. I love compilations but I'm hooked to original scores. Nancy....I'll have to check out the True Romance score from Hans Zimmer. He is great.

I love Hans Zimmer. Now, tell me if I'm wrong, didn't he do the Miami Vice theme?
Posted By: Danielle Primetime TV Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/26/07 11:03 PM
One of my favorite soundtracks is from the movie I Am Sam. I've never actually seen the film, but I picked up the CD and had to have it. Two words: Rufus Wainwright.
Posted By: Terrence Re: Movie Soundtracks - 09/27/07 11:22 PM
Chel, I think you are right about Mr Zimmer doing Miami Vice.

Danielle, nice suggestion. I'll have to check it out!

I don't know if anyone is a fan of the Coen Brothers. They did Blood Simple, Barton Fink, Fargo and a bunch of others. But Carter Burwell did the music for them and he is another favorite. Very atmospheric yet unassuming.

OK - you have to understand, i am a big musical theatre-type person...

Bette Midler's "For the Boys" just came on AMC last night - totally LOVE that soundtrack, I can SING with it, LOL! Also "Beaches" for the same reason.

I want to reincarnated as Bette!

So, ummm . . . would we call you Bella Bette or Bette Harmony? Just let me know for my records!!!
Hugs, Chel
Posted By: Justin - Horror Lit Site Re: Movie Soundtracks - 10/13/07 05:19 AM
You know, I HATED the movie, but the soundtrack of "Queen of the Damned," written mostly by Jonathan Davis, rocks.

I think one of my all-time favorites would have to be the soundtrack of "The Lost Boys."

This is cheating a little, but the tenure of "Six Feet Under" brought some incredible music to the small screen.

Bette Harmony sounds like some kind of sick fighting fish. sick

Hey! I'm "borrowing" your thread for a Halloween poll.

(BTW - "Lost Boys" soundtrack is fantastic!)

Have you heard the Across the Universe soundtrack? One of the kids I intern with at umg said its a great movie soundtrack.

No, I have not. However, you spiked my interest and I'm going to check it out. By the way, what is umg?

Miami Vice was done by Jan Hammer.

A couple of my fave soundtracks are from West Side Story and Amadeus.

Oh yeah Loved Sylvester Stallone singing the theme to "Paradise Alley" lol. Anyone see this movie or hear the theme? He starred in it in 1978 I believe, you know, when Chel was out of high school. smile

How about Broadway Show Soundtracks?

I love Les Miserables.

And how about Phantom of the Opera?! Five years ago, my youngest son was in the hospital, recovering from a serious accident. He couldn't talk much at that time, and had only spoken a few garbled words. I had a tape player next to his head, and when the intense piano of the Theme Song began pounding, he raised his head, looked at me, and said in a clear, whispery voice:

"Phantom!"

There are so many good movie soundtracks out there. personally, I love "The Mirror Has Two Faces". Beautiful music.

A couple of my favorite soundtracks are from the movies "The Virgin Suicides" and "The Rules of Attraction". I just saw "Juno" and I think I might buy that soundtrack as well.
Posted By: Michelle - Short Stories Re: Movie Soundtracks - 01/03/08 06:41 PM
I'm getting ready to check out the soundtrack for the musical "Spamalot".

I also just listened to "Charlotte's Web" by Danny Elfman. It was nice and sweet. Totally different from what I'm used to in Elfman's work.
