Most nurses and health care workers perform their jobs with professionalism and a deep sense of caring for those they serve. However, there are always a few bullies in the bunch that make everyone's work life quite challenging. You know the ones I am referring to! They are often disruptive, intimidating, rude to coworkers and/or patients, constantly refuse assignments, have outbursts, and sometimes even threaten others with physical violence. These bullies may be coworkers, physicians or nurse managers.

Well finally, help has arrived! The new JCAHO standards, which went into effect on Jan 1st of this year, require health care organizations to put a lid on bullies in healthcare and will hold health care agencies responsible for doing so!

I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this topic...

Personally, I will believe it, when I see it. JCAHO, may put the standard in writing but the hospitals will have to put it into to action. To be personally honest, while I would love to see it work, I am doubtful. Especially, when it comes to physicians and administration. You know the old saying, "Money talks and BS walks."

Oh, Mari! You are so right! I am hoping that the educational requirements that the standards request will at least shed some light on the issue...let us hope!
