"Respect", the Aretha Franklin biopic starring Jennifer Hudson, is currently in pre-production. The script is from "Thelma and Louise" scribe Callie Khouri. Liesl Tommy, whose previous credits include "Queen Sugar" and "The Walking Dead", will direct. MGM is producing and announced August 14th, 2020 as the release date. In the meantime, fans of Aretha can head to theaters on April 5th to view the critically-acclaimed documentary "Amazing Grace".

Update: Additional cast for "Respect" has been announced: Mary J. Blige, Forest Whitaker, Audra McDonald, and Marlon Wayans. Callie Khouri's script was apparently rejected as Deadline.com is reporting that Tracey Scott Wilson is the credited writer. Production begins next month with a scheduled release in August, 2020.
