WarnerMedia announced today that the streaming service Filmstruck will shut down and is no longer accepting subscriptions. Filmstruck was the online source for the Criterion Collection, which is an important source of world cinema and the best of American film past and present. Criterion released a statement expressing regret and uncertainty about where their films would be streamed after the November 29th shutdown of Filmstruck. WarnerMedia, meanwhile, has plans for a new streaming service in 2019 that would cater to more mainstream tastes. A blow for cinephiles.
Update: A diverse group of filmmakers including Ana Lily Amirpour, Barry Jenkins, Barbra Streisand, and Christopher Nolan lobbied Warner Bros. against shutting down Filmstruck and reducing access to classic films. Their voices were heard because on Friday, Warner and Criterion announced that in Spring of 2019, the Criterion Channel will launch. The streaming site will feature the Criterion Collection and films from the WarnerMedia library. The special programming that Filmstruck offered will continue on the new site, including original documentaries, filmmaker spotlights, and actor retrospectives.
