Hi BellaOnline Family:

Not too sure what you would call it, but the bread "ends" or "edges" - the crust, maybe(lol).

Anyway, anyone cuts them off before eating their sandwiches?
If yes, why?

Me, depending on how stale the bread is - otherwise I eat ALL of the bread.

Hugs,
A

We always called the loaf ends the "heels". I love the heels and prefer to make sandwiches with one heel and one regular slice. Luckily I am the only one in my family who will eat the heels, so they are always left for me.

LOL Claybird, so I learn't a new name - heels. Awesome!

Sylvester hates them so me and the 2 doggies (Jeremiah/Jack Russell Terrier & Bobbie/3 legged female Pitt Butt) enjoy them.

I do not cut the edges off my slices of bread in a sandwich. However, the ends of the loaf (heels) I really don't like so I give them to the birds or squirrels when the loaf of bread is finished. Keeping the heels against the loaf while you still have slices of bread left does help to keep the more attractive slices from drying out too soon.

Yes Cassie, I did hear that the heels do help to keep the rest of the loaf moist.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing with us - much APPRECIATED!

Although I do have to say, when the bread is a freshly baked loaf of a more hearty bread from a bakery....like a round rye, a french baguette, or an Italian bread, I don't mind the heels. I spread a little butter on them and enjoy the chewiness. Yum.....
Cassie, I enjoy the heels from the artisan loaves just like you do.

One good way that I've found to use the less attractive heels is to butter the cut sides, put a piece of cheese on the brown side, and grill a cheese sandwich. This also works well with leftover hamburger buns. I call them "inside out" grilled cheese sandwiches.

Angela, thanks for starting this thread. I love to have folks post in the Sandwiches Forum.

Sometimes I don't want a yeast bread at all. Give me a tortilla! I've developed a new recipe for a high fiber tortilla that's homemade. It is yummy!
I've been sampling the new high fiber tortilla recipe. Today I had melted cheese, black beans with jalapenos, salsa, and baby lettuce on one of these tortillas for lunch. I never thought that I would like a high fiber tortilla so much!

Homemade tortillas are incredibly tasty. Once you get the rolling and cooking rhythm down pat, it is easy to make them, too.
