59 of 252 Remain as PBA World Series of Bowling Enters Week Two
World�s best players ready for match play leading to stepladder finals next Friday and Saturday
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 30, 2010) � The Professional Bowlers Association�s 2010 World Series of Bowling began with a field of 252 bowlers from 14 countries, including 10 women and a pair of teenagers, and now it�s down to the 59 best.
The PBA World Series will begin its second week of competition Monday at South Point Bowling Center after a grueling five days of 12-game qualifying rounds on five different PBA lane conditioning patterns. The top 16 qualifiers who survived each of the daily contests � the Brunswick Pro Bowler Cheetah Championship, Pepsi Viper Championship, Chameleon Championship, Scorpion Championship and GEICO Shark Championship � will return to the lanes Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday for another nine games of round robin match play.
After a total of 21 games, the top five players in each group will advance to stepladder finals which will be contested Friday and Saturday at South Point Bowling Center for delayed telecast on ESPN. The first championship to air on ESPN will be the Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship, which will air on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. Eastern. The Pepsi Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and GEICO Shark finals will then air on ESPN successive Sundays, also at 1 p.m.
The match play fields will include a diverse field of players representing 10 different countries. PBA World Championship qualifying leader Bill O�Neill of Southampton, Pa., is the only player to qualify for four of the five match play rounds (Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion). Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., advanced in three disciplines (Cheetah, Viper and Chameleon). Sixteen players have qualified for two match play rounds. A total of 41 other players will bowl in one match play round each.
Fifteen of the 59 match play qualifiers are international players, representing Finland (three), Canada (three), England (two), South Korea (two), Colombia, Venezuela, Australia, Sweden and Denmark.
The Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour�s first live television event of the 2010-11 season will be a unique three-day finale of the PBA World Championship. The top eight players after a combined 60 qualifying games during Week One of the World Series will return to South Point on Jan. 14, 15 and 16 to decide the season�s first major title, the 2011 PBA World Championship.
In the meantime, the players who survived the five daily stages in Week One will be back on the lanes starting Monday with the Cheetah and Viper match play rounds at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. (Pacific), respectively. On Tuesday, the top 16 Chameleon and Scorpion qualifiers will bowl their match play rounds, also at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Shark match play round will complete the qualifying stage of the World Series at 8 a.m. Thursday.
On Friday, the top five qualifiers from the Cheetah, Viper and Chameleon Championships will bowl their stepladder finals at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, ESPN will tape the stepladder finals of the Scorpion, Shark and USA vs. The World team match at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
Tickets for all match play and television rounds are available at the gate at South Point Bowling Center.
