Consciousness has the ability to transform the physical at the individual microcosmic level. For instance, when a person is engaged in cognitive behavioral therapy and other forms of psychotherapy, she can essentially rewire her brain. Former deficiencies in brain chemistry, such as serotonin depletion can be compensated for with conscious thought. In this manner, a psychiatric patient is exerting a conscious control over her own brain chemistry.
