There is no easy way. It took me a few weeks of trying. You need to get 13 balloons with no birds or 14 balloons and 1 bird, or some other similar combination. One site recommended that you think of the race in three sections. The first part focus on getting the ballons, then when you round the corner focus mainly on dodging birds and then the last leg try to get as many balloons as you can. Keep trying! It's frustrating, but if you keep playing eventually you'll get it.
update its about 2:30 am and i have a new low score 3.5 seconds. 1 dang bird hit me right when i was about to cross the finish line. I hate birds.
My best time was 03.x.
Then I decided I give a sh*t to Tidus's weapon and I won't try it ever again.

I think the main thing is to be stubborn and kep trying. it took me like 4 hours (I had 0.0.3 *grr* after about 3.5 hours) to finally get 0.0.0, but actually once oyu've done it once, you can do a repeat performance fairly easily, so I think it's just a matter of finding out where the balloons are, where the birds like to come from and learning how to control the chocobo in a more efficient manner (don't overstear!)

I amost beat it today right their at the end and BANG!bird birds do more than three seconds because they stun youre chocobo. in totle they take of about 4.5 seconds. I ended up with about 4 sec. at the end of that race. If anybody knows a secret about how to get the sun sigil plese tell me.

I've only been trying a few mins, but my best is 0.17.......I can't even beat the trainer to the 1st set of balloons..........is there any knack or useful advice to controlling the chocobo?I can avoid the birds quite well but I can't get the balloons.
let her get the first ballon and consentraid urself to get the second or third, she will go for the first and that gives u the chance to get to the second before she does.
but that depents much on how the balloons are lined up.
update: My new best score is a little over one and a halve seconds ive just about one the last few times ive tried im joing to go get the sun sigil now.....hopefully
lol dont get frustrated i got really frustrated then gave up and a few days later i tried and was relaxed and i got it within a few trys
what you need to do in the first part is to go for the first balloon on the right. the trainer might get the first one or two balloons if they are on the left, but you will get the rest on the first stretch. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
as for the birds that come out of nowhere and hit you b4 you even see them, i found them easy to avoid if you just move diagonally for most of the time rather than straight. it will barely affect your time. you should do so towards the end of the 2nd stretch, and at the end of the race.
personally i didn't see the big deal about the chocobo race, i did it in a half hour. the main thing is to keep a positive attitude, and it's alot less frustrating the less birds hit you, that's more important than getting balloons.

I got 0.00 on my fourth or fifth try today, with 13 balloons and 0 birds. If you get way ahead of the trainer, the birds just stop coming for you. Either that or i just got real lucky cause very few birds came for me. Basically, in the first, straightaway part of the race, you need to get 3 or 4 of those balloons-just let the chocobo go straight and he's a touch faster than the other person. In the winding part of the course, don't go for the balloons, just make a beeline for the finish. Just make sure you go on a line that makes you run into a bunch of balloons. Eventually you'll get lucky and win with 0.00

The secret is really to go diagonolly like the dre said. If you do that and just try to ge as many balloons as you can. It will take along time i started monday morning stayed up all monday night played all dday tuesday.woke up at 7:30
wesday morning and at 4:15 wensday afternoon i finally beat it. Aintd was talking in his post <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> about dark yojimbo keeps him up at night. well i couldnt go to sleep without dreaming of riding on an oversized chicken dodging birds. but now i can finally sleep easily.
I lack the wonderful dedication of you people......I try it, fail, get frustrated, try again then decide I can't be bothered........every time :-(
Get more than 15 ballons and you are done, basicly, i got it on my third try, 16 balloons, 3 birds, and a time less than 40 secs, 39.8 i think. you just have to be lucky enough to get the balloons on your side at the start, she goes for them but gets stuck behind you, and then just avoid the occaisional bird and concentrate on the balloons, there are two rows of bal;loons after the first stretch, and you can get the one on each side if you steer quick, meaning you end up with many more ballons than needed, but you end up going in a

pattern, straight after the race you'll see a guy to the left saying you did well to beat her, he used to guard a path in the top west that gives the unpowered caladbolg, so go there now, it isn't a seperate area, so there is no green dot on the map, and you have to get off your chocobo.
You don't need under 0.0.0 to get that - I have that, and I haven't managed under 0.0.0 (though I have improved my time to 0.6.4, giving me renewed hope I might manage it).
To get the weapon all you need is to beat her in the race when shes at the entrance to the calm lands.
When I did it i had my best regular time ever i had 34 seconds annd i got 13 balloons and 0 bird so actual when you do the math i got a score of aproximitly -5 seconds, it took long enough but i finally beat the stupid thing after probably 1000 tries
