hello! I'm a 'newbie' here and first of all I wanted to start off by telling everyone hello!
I have 2 cockateils (father,Charlie and child,Jar-Jar).I was curious as to how you can tell cockateils are male or female? I know that Charlie is male as my uncle had given me him with his mate,Baby.Shortly after Baby's eggs hatched,she suddenly passed away,so we hand raised Jar-Jar from a hatchling,and he/she is now a little over a year old. I keep thinking that Jar-Jar is a female as all of a sudden started acting like a female protecting her nest-it is an ivisible nest LOL <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I have them in separate cages,by the way. We had thought about putting them in together if Jar-Jar was a male,but I don't want to do that if female-for obvious reasons. LOL I apologize if I rambled on too much! Hello and welcome! I am Connie and mom to a Meyers Parrot, Miss P and a Blue and Gold Macaw, Hannah. Some colors of the cockatiels you can visually sex. What color is your cockatiel? Can you post a picture of her? Males tend to be the ones that whistle and talk although there are exceptions to every rule!

Male Cockatiels are normally much more vocal than females, so if you have a bird that you can't sex by appearance, the singing (or non singing) may be the best way to determine sex.

As far as a photo, I do not have one readily available to put on here (If I ever remember to get all those rolls of film I have tucked away developed...I will then LOL)
For the most part,Jar Jar is white/yellow with alot of yellows and grays speckled on him/her,looks alot like the mother did.JarJar is fairly quiet,unless I whistle to him/her,then chirping commences! Although Charlie is very verbal indeed...he does the wolf whistle,and whistles for the dog,says peekaboo,and pretty bird,and several more things! So,maybe JarJar is female? Guess I'll have to wait and see! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hello! I'm new here as well. In the normal mutation, male cockatiels have yellow or orange cheek patches, females have grey where this is. On the underside of the tail feathers (the bit you can see when the bird is facing you) females have black barring across the feathers. who knew??? I thought they ALL had the orange cheeks! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I will check under Jar-Jar's tail feathers more closely when I get him/her out for playtime, he/she just turned a year old a couple of months ago. I had read somewhere that it is hard to determine until they have reached full maturity. Thanks for all the imput! Have a wonderful day!
